Joan MacKenzie
MacKenzie, Joan Alvina (Mooring) – Age 90, Truro, passed away on October 8, 2023, in The Mira Long Term Care surrounded by love. Born in Springhill on June 11, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Carrie (Fisher) Mooring. Joan was the last surviving member of her family.
Joan is survived by her son, Roderick Daniel (Kate); grandson, Justin (Katie); great grandson, Felix; life-long friend who was more like a daughter, Bonita (Ricky) Lindsay and her family, Stacey (Nadine) and the dog, Timber. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband, Campbell MacKenzie; daughter, Kerry-Lee and several brothers and sisters.
Joan worked for many years as a cook in a nursing home in New Glasgow. She was the caregiver to many of her family members. A loving wife, mother and friend, Joan would go out of her way to do anything for anybody. Including baking sweet trays for what seemed to be everyone in Springhill at Christmas time. Her marshmallow squares and Eat-more bars were a favourite.
If there was anything to know about Joan, it would be her love for animals and camping. She enjoyed camping at Sandpoint each year with Bonnie and their families. Joan had too many dogs to name, but Pooh Bear and JoJo were very special to her, as well as her horse, that she loved dearly.
When they were younger, Joan and her brother and sister were on Don Messer’s Jubilee. Her brother played the fiddle while she and her sister danced. Joan was always a beautiful dancer and would light up whenever she heard a good dancing tune.
A very special thank you to the nursing staff at The Mira for the love and care given to Joan during her time there.
Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the SPCA or a charity of choice.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 13th at 2:30 in West Branch Cemetery, Pictou County with Eileen Corah officiating. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
