Joan was born on July 5th 1946 to Melva and Lloyd Rossiter in Winnipeg Manitoba. She grew up in Elmwood and met her future husband of 60 years at Elmwood High. They started their family early having their son Michael in 1964. Though it wasn’t easy they persevered and within a few years had settled in St. James where they remained. An unexpected pregnancy brought along their daughter Cindy in 1973. Joan was very community oriented and quickly became involved at Bourkevale Community Center where she was an avid volunteer and board member for over 40 years. Her community became family and family was everything to her.
Joan loved time spent with family and friends. There was lots of laughter around kitchen tables over the years, usually over meals or late-night games. Girls night card games at Audrey’s were common and weekends at Lee River with Jerry and Lois were a favourite. Frequent time was spent with Connie and Stan playing cards, going to dances, singing and having fun. She loved to dance, and she and Ron could really tear up the tiles.
Though Joan didn’t like roughing it, a VW camper van had them traveling across Canada and much of the U.S. In time they upgraded to a pop-up camper and eventually a hard walled trailer to camp in style. Their adventures over the years were reduced to destinations closer to home but they still camped frequently. A favorite place to spend weeks in the summer was either the Pas or Rocky Lake. The Duncan family could always provide a good time and deep belly laughs. In these later years of life, a place was purchased north of Gimli and being by the lake was priceless. Spruce Sands became a very happy place for her and the lake family was treasured.
Nothing brought Joan more joy than her family time. And fortunately, there was a lot of it. Her children and grandchildren, all within 10 minutes of each other, made get togethers frequent. Her grandchildren, Ryan (31), Scott (27), Matthew (19) and Lexi (17) provided so many smiles throughout the years. Her love for them grew as they matured, and she was very proud of them all. Family gatherings always included game play and she never shied away from any challenge or potentially embarrassing situations.
Joan loved flowers and baking, birds (especially loons) and being by water, puzzles, reading and music, the zoo, the park, crocheting and bingo, games, laughter and containers of all sizes, she loved friends and family… and we all loved her.
When Ron was diagnosed with cancer, Joan never left his side and celebrated his survival victory with him. More recently when Joan was diagnosed with cancer Ron did the same. They always supported one another and lived life to their fullest.
These past few years were filled with health struggles and she faced every one of them like a champ. She lived with rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years, had 5 surgeries in the past 7 years, 2 of them major surgeries with the last one being just weeks ago. She fought long and hard and can finally rest fully.
She will be missed dearly.
Donations in her memory may be made to Cancer Care or a charity of your choice.
