Joan Patricia McCarrel (née Lambert) of Mt. Hope, passed peacefully on Saturday, June 1 at Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas, ON, at the age of 68. Joan was born in Vancouver, B.C. on May 30, 1956, to parents Lucien and Celia (née Boucher) Lambert. The family, including brothers Bryan (Cathy), Dennis (Sue), and twin John (Kim) moved to Toronto, ON soon after. Joan attended Richview Collegiate and then graduated from Shaw Business College. Joan worked for Dairy Farmers of Ontario for over 30 years. She retired from her role as a marketing officer handling logistics in January 2020.
Joan met her future husband, William “Hugh” McCarrel in 1973 at St. George’s Golf & Country Club. They were married on May 22, 1976. They moved to Brampton for the next 32 years where they raised daughters, Taralyn and Heather (Bernard Sharpe). Joan was an inspiration to her daughters who are successful professionals. She was a ‘soccer Mom’ only it was softball, basketball, volleyball, and equestrian sports. Joan was kind, caring and compassionate leading her and Hugh to move to Mt. Hope in 2009 to care for her dad.
Joan was an accomplished curler having won 11 club championships, 2 TCA Senior Mixed titles and numerous bonspiels. She was also a certified Level 2 curling instructor. Joan was an accomplished dog trainer and taught at Campaign Dog Academy. She certified Sable (Husky) and Laser (Sheltie) as St. John’s Ambulance therapy dogs.
Joan enjoyed the outdoors and numerous athletic pursuits including field hockey, skiing, basketball, running, golf, and a variety of water sports. She also loved to travel across Canada, the United States, Europe, Singapore, and Australia. However, Joan’s focus changed in 2020 with the birth of her first granddaughter Naomi to Heather and beloved son-in-law Bernard. Her favourite activity became caring for her granddaughters Naomi and Harlow, who followed in 2022. They brought her so much light and joy as she battled cancer.
Joan’s passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew her, but her memory will be a source of inspiration and comfort. Though she left us too soon, her legacy of love and resilience will endure for future generations.
Thank you to Dr. Gunning, Dr. Foley, the ER doctors, and all the health care professionals and staff at Juravinski Cancer Centre, Juravinski Hospital, and Margaret’s Place Hospice who provided such excellent and compassionate care. Thank you to her nurse Joanne who visited her every Tuesday, and to the PSWs who provided daily home care. Thank you also to the paramedics who treated Joan with great care.
A Celebration of Life is currently being planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Hamilton Health Sciences – Juravinski Cancer Centre or to St. Joseph’s Villa – Margaret’s Place Hospice.
