With broken hearts, we the family of Joan Patricia Brooks, age 84, announce her passing on Thursday, June 15th 2023, at the Northside General Hospital.
Mom was born in Duntara, Bonavista Bay, NL, on June 7, 1939 to the late William and Josephine (Matthews) Fitzgerald and in her early years of life was then raised by her grandparents, Jane and Michael Matthews of Duntara.
After leaving home at the young age of 15, she started her work career in Gander, NL, where she met and married her lifelong love of 49 years, our dad, until his passing in 2006. Together as newlyweds, they made the crossing from Newfoundland to North Sydney, and after mom being so seasick, she declared “we’re staying put”. This is where they lovingly raised us.
After many years of being a “stay at home” mom, her sense of adventure took her out to seek employment in her lifelong passion of caring for others. Mom and her dear deceased friend, Pat Power, headed down over the hill to find employment at the Northside Community Guest Home as a PCW for 15 years. It was then that she and our dad retired together to begin their lives of travel and spending quality time with family and friends. In recent years, mom enjoyed her ventures out to many pensioner events, where she made and enjoyed the company of new and old friends. Mom was very thankful for the friendships she shared with her two special friends, Alberta Devoe and Marina Newman. She also shared a special bond with her nieces Jean and Loretta and step brother Mike (Barb). Joan was an active member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church and belonged to the UCW. Although mom loved shopping and hitting the road, nothing could compare to time spent with her beloved grandchildren. Everyone who met our mother was left with her sincere feeling of caring and love. That’s who she was.
Joan will be greatly missed by her two sons, Ward (Debbie), Jason (Amy) and daughter Lynn (Ron) Ivey, all of North Sydney. Her grandchildren, Carly Ivey, Haley (Larkey) Ivey, Jason, Brandon and Kaydon Brooks; Great-grandchildren, Abigail and expected baby girl in July who she was very excited to hold. Along with step-brothers and step-sisters, many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces whom she held dear in her heart.
Besides her parents and grandparents, Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Irvin Brooks, and her son Gary, North Sydney, her sister, Winifred (Peter) Nolan and brother Leslie (Gigi) Fitzgerald, both in Newfoundland.
Our most heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Center, especially Dr. Wissam Saliba, Dr. Jean Crosby and Dr. Alison Archibald for your kindness and compassion shown to our mom during her every visit. A special thank you to Drs. Andrew and Alex Wawer, Bev and Tanya for being there for our mom in her times of need. We would also like to thank the staff of the 4th and 5th floors of the Northside General Hospital during mom’s brief stays there over the past year.
There will be no visitation by request. A celebration of her life will be held at 11am, Saturday, June 24th 2023, at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Leitches Creek with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Memorial Donations in Joan’s memory can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or to a charity of choice.
