Obituary
Unconditionally Loving. Generous. Kind. Independent. Vibrant.
Joan fiercely loved her family, immediate and extended, and provided unwavering support to them always. Her shining example showed all those she loved the truest meaning of the word ‘family’. Her love extended to all the lives she touched: her neighbor’s, her students, her fellow golfers, the teaching community and all her incredibly caring healthcare workers. She was eternally grateful to everyone who supported her along her journey this past year.
Celebrating the successes of those she loved, Joan would often write notes praising their accomplishments and triumphs. She cheered on the sidelines with gusto and delight, and those well-known “woo woo woos” will echo in our hearts forever. If someone she loved was in pain, she felt it deeply, and you could always count on her support. She cherished spending time with those she loved most, sharing meals, having cups of tea on her patio with her beautiful view, walking the steepest hills in Corner Brook at the fastest pace, and of course, dancing. Just try to keep Joany Mac in her seat when Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” played. Impossible!
Tom Carey, her husband of fifty years, was her partner in life, love and all things. Together, they enjoyed raising their family, grandparenting their boys, solving crossword puzzles, playing along with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, watching The Repair Shop, and her nightly foot rubs. Tom and Joan celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on September 22nd with a family singsong and dance party in room 315 at Palliative Care.
Her daughters, Suzanne and Jacqueline, were her proudest accomplishments and greatest gifts. When Peter MacDonald joined the family, she felt she had won the son-in-law lottery. Her precious grandchildren, Oliver and Jesse, were the lights of her life. From teaching them to ride a bike, to attending all their activities, their Nana encouraged them to pursue their dreams and was their biggest cheerleader. They are all so grateful to be in her circle of love forever.
Her beautiful siblings and dear friends: Melinda Coles (Bill), Allan MacDonald, Marilyn Saccoccio (Vic) and Jeanette Dawe; along with her much-loved family by marriage: Ruth Hillier, Diane Griffin (Mike), Neil Carey, Annetta Power and Fran Carey; her chosen family: Mazie House and Susan MacInnis; and her many loving and supportive cousins, nieces, nephews and friends have a lifetime of memories to cherish. Her bonus children: Angela, Jamie, Karen, Edward, Paula and Michaelyn and so many more will always remember her chocolate chip muffins and her unconditional love. If you were a friend of Suzanne and Jacqueline’s, you can be certain you had a special place in Joan’s heart.
Another circle of love awaited Joan the day she passed: her parents, Joseph and Loretta MacDonald; Tom’s parents, Bob and Hazel Carey; her grandparents, Bride and Flood Gregory; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim Dawe, Lorraine Keats, Vernon Carey, Colin Carey, Angus Carey, George Power, Donnie Hillier and Ruby Carey; and her dear friend Herb House were waiting with open arms. What a reunion!
Her bright red hair, her vibrant style and her zest for life will be forever etched in our hearts and minds. We feel so very blessed to have had such a precious wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, confidant, aunt, cousin and friend.
To celebrate Joan’s life, we will be gathering in joy and welcoming family and friends to her beloved home at 34 Atlantic Avenue on Saturday, Oct 21st, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. She wanted us to remind you to dress warm so we can celebrate in her garden.
Help us continue Joan’s legacy. Hug the people you love, tell them what you love about them, build up their strengths and take care of each other. In the true spirit of paying forward all the love and care Joan received on this journey, you may make a donation to the Western Regional Hospital Foundation in her memory.
A life filled with joy and gratitude. A journey completed with grace, acceptance and peace. A beautiful legacy of love for us all.
