We announce that our mother Joan Shoeman passed away peacefully with family at her side in Regina on Thursday June 6, 2024 at the age of 87.
Mom was born May 31, 1937 to Harry and Kathleen Willis in Regina. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband H.C. (Joe) in 2011 and eldest son Russell in 2021.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her sons Randy and Ray; big sister Betty Ann (Larry) and nephew Kevin of Maple Ridge, B.C.; granddaughter Jennifer Boudreau (Juan); great- grandson Emiliano Gohlke; and Jennifer’s mother Gloria Shoeman of Fredericton, N.B.
Mom is also survived by brother-in-laws Stan Shoeman of Elmwood Park, N.J. and Alex Sitter of Regina, Sk. and will also be fondly remembered by nieces, nephews and friends.
Mom met the love of her life – Harry Chalmer (Joe) Shoeman – when she began working at Co-Operative Hail Insurance in Regina. Mom and Dad married in October, 1957 and began their life long journey together which included the raising of their three sons. Although she continued to work casually for many years until Dad’s retirement, Mom’s first priorities were always home and family. Whether it was celebrations on the back deck, rumpus room parties or traditional holiday gatherings, our home was often filled with family, good friends and neighbours and Mom was the most gracious and welcoming hostess.
Mom faced adversities with the loss of our Dad and our big brother but she accepted them stoically and with poise and a grace that defined her character. She was met with several health challenges in the last few years which she also faced with grace and dignity, especially this last one which she surely knew would be insurmountable. With the support and care of her two boys, she was very happy to be able to stay in her own home where she was most comfortable. At times, she may have believed herself to be a burden but we never saw her as such. For all the sacrifices she made for us over the years, we were proud and honoured to spend so much time with her to provide comfort as she faced her last challenge. Much gratitude to her special niece Shelley (Rosario) Carteri for the visits in Mom’s final days and Lyn Smith for the calls. Each sparked joy in Mom and provided her with a profound sense of comfort.
We wish to acknowledge and thank the amazing staff at Pasqua Hospital Ward 2 – MSU and Ward 3A – Palliative for taking such great care of our Mom in her final days. Words cannot express.
No formal service is planned but we appreciate your warm thoughts and prayers and welcome donations in Mom’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or any organization close to your heart.
She will forever be in our hearts. Anybody should be so lucky to live a life such as hers.
