Obituary for
Joan Ellen Haig
Mar 3, 1936 – Oct 31, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Ellen Haig on October 31, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Judy; son-in-law, Geoff; sister, Lillian Synryk; brother-in-law, Don Syrnyk; nieces, Cristina Swinnerton (Gareth) and Leslie Sanchez, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Doug, who died on May 19th, just five months before her passing.
Joan was born and raised in Edmonton, the oldest daughter of John and Mary Basarab. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Education and Home Economics and went on to teach with the Catholic School Board for over 30 years. She also met her husband Doug while they were students at the U of A, and they went on to share a lifelong love of nature and outdoor adventures. They took many happy hiking and cycling vacations throughout Canada and the United States, and always took time to travel to wherever their daughter was living. They had a special love for Waterton and Victoria. Joan loved nature and being active in the outdoors. She spent many peaceful hours walking the dog in Edmonton’s beautiful river valley, either with friends or with Doug. She delighted in identifying the birds that came to her feeders, and the wildflowers she encountered on her walks, and she loved to share this knowledge. She loved gardening, art and music as well and she instilled these passions in her daughter. She also loved being with her family and attending family occasions.
Joan and Doug raised their daughter in their home on MacKenzie ravine that they shared with a succession of much-loved dogs. They lived there for most of their adult lives but moved to the Touchmark seniors’ residence two years ago. Joan thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to socialize and attend the many activities held there, and loved visiting with new friends, both staff and residents. The family wishes to extend special thanks to all the staff at Touchmark for their kind and loving care.
Joan is dearly missed by all who loved her, and we hold her close in our hearts.
A Memorial Service for both Joan and Doug will be held Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue NW, Edmonton.
Joan was a generous and loving friend to many and a supporter of many causes, including the Hope Mission and WIN House. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to a charity of your choosing.
