On March 15, 2024, our beloved mother Joan Catherine Shaw passed away peacefully after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease at Toronto Western Hospital. She was 91 years old.
Joan was born in Toronto on July 14, 1932 to Rita and Harold Armstrong. As a child, she lived in Ottawa, Collingwood and Vancouver but settled in Toronto, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree at the University of Toronto. Joan married Dr. William Shaw on March 31, 1956 and together they raised their three adored children in the community of Hogg’s Hollow. Joan was a copywriter and editor, and she acted in both community and professional theatre. In the early 1980s, Joan obtained her MSW. A social worker for 15 years, she was employed by several agencies, and subsequently began a private practice. She was known for her outgoing personality and good sense of humour among her friends and colleagues. Joan greatly enjoyed travelling, hosting dinner parties, going to the theatre and watching the Sopranos.
Joan was a loving and devoted wife and mother and will be greatly missed by her family. Joan was preceded in death by her husband William (December 24, 1995). She is survived by her daughter Catherine (Bill) and her granddaughters Caitlin (Joseph), Madeleine (Teddy) and Lindsay (Kevin) and her great-granddaughters Ivy and Juniper; by her son Geoffrey (Kiyomi); and by her daughter Joanna (Gregg) and her granddaughters Eva and Naomi.
Special thanks to the caring staff at New Horizons Retirement Home where Joan spent her final years.
A funeral service will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home (159 Eglinton Ave. W, Toronto) on Saturday, April 20th at 1 pm. With a reception to follow.
