It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joan Carlson (nee: Armstrong) on December 5, 2023 at the age of 89 at the Weyburn General Hospital. Surrounded by her family, Joan passed away peacefully.
She was predeceased by her husband Armund with whom she shared a long and happy marriage. She is also predeceased by her sister-in-law Mary Armstrong; brother-in-law Douglas Carlson; and sister-in-law Joan Proulx.
Joan will be forever loved and remembered by her four children: Brian (Karen) Carlson, Lethbridge, AB, Cindy (Barrie) Ryan, Regina, SK, Debby (Ray) Lunn, Regina, SK and Brent (Jackie) Carlson, Medicine Hat, AB; her 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren: Christopher Carlson, Daniel Carlson (Samantha) [Katie, Zander], Travis Carlson (Raquel) [Brett, Casey]; Corie Ryan (Irina) [Alexandra, Erica, Dane], Amanda Blotski (Jody) [Jaxon, Griffin, Messer], Prestin Ryan (Kalie) [Dakota, Olin], Cooper Ryan (Bree) [Emma, Joe]; Jerod Lunn [Blake], Danley Lunn [Milan]; Ryan Carlson (Jill) [Ashlyn, Madelyn, Brooklyn], Kali Carlson (Derek) and Toni Carlson; her brother Don Armstrong; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joan was born in Regina, SK on April 24, 1934 to Thomas and Alice Armstrong. Joan moved around a lot as a child and went to four different schools. She thought she was always the new kid, maybe that’s why she made friends so easily. She talked about her school best friend, Lois Domes, who lived on a farm and she spent as much time as she could with her and enjoyed the farm and riding horses. Joan always wanted to live on a farm and that worked out.
She met Armund through a mutual friend. Their favorite date was a memorable one, they went to a ball game in Estevan, “Gordie Howe” was playing first base for the Saskatoon team. Their dates must have gone well as on a date to a movie, Armund asked her to marry him. Joan and Armund were married on September 21, 1953. Joan took training at the Saskatchewan training school as a psychiatric nurse. Their married life was spent on a rented farm for 34 years than they built a new farmstead and lived there for 13 years before moving to Weyburn. They spent 15 winters in California.
Joan enjoyed curling, golf, coaching softball and instructing curling. She also loved following her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on all their activities. She kept busy in her 80ies making buns and spending time with her wonderful friends having coffee, lunch, visits and bus trips. She was thankful for each and every one of her friends.
There will be no funeral service at Joan’s request. A Private Family interment will be held at a later date at Westphalia Cemetery, Midale, SK.
