It is with great sadness we let you know that Joan Baird (nee Vaughan) died peacefully on January 6, 2023, ending a joyful life that spanned 94 years.
Joan is predeceased by her husband Ernest, her brother Wyntor, and her son James. Her brother Ted sadly passed 11 days after her. Joan is survived by her sister Carol and her children, John (Nancy), Rosemary, David (Sharon), Kathryn (Ivor) and her daughter-in-law Sally; 12 grandchildren, David, Greg, Andrew, Shannon, Elizabeth, Christina, Nicholas, Steven, Laura, Madalene, Cecilly and Felicia; 12 great-grandchildren, Chance, Nolan, Elizabeth, Mckenzie, Abigail, Atticus, Thomas, Claire, Jacqueline, Brynna, Amelia, Annabelle and one on the way!
Joan was born October 7, 1928, to John and Rose Vaughan in Cumberland, BC. The youngest of 4 children, she had fond childhood memories of singing in the church choir, reading and dancing around the May pole and spending summers at the family beach house in Union Bay. As a teen, Joan began piano lessons, won awards in public speaking and was voted high school president and valedictorian.
Joan went to Normal School in Vancouver to study to be a teacher. Upon completion, she moved back to the island to teach in the one room schoolhouse in Royston. In 1950, Joan returned to UBC to pursue her degree in Education where she met her husband Ernie, a WWII Air Force veteran. They fell in love at first sight and were married 8 months later, August 25, 1951. She and Ernie raised their five children in Burnaby and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2016. Along with caring lovingly for her family, and working as a teacher, Joan enjoyed music, gardening, cooking, sewing and reading. Joan was devout in her faith and volunteered tirelessly in outreach programs with South Burnaby United Church.
Joan and Ernie created so many wonderful memories with their family: in particular, summer holidays camping, canoeing and hiking; road trips throughout BC and the Pacific northwest; connecting with family at family reunions and Christmas gatherings. In retirement, they travelled across Canada and to Europe, attending Air Force reunions and visiting extended family and friends in Wales and other parts of Great Britain.
Joan and Ernie exemplified hard work, integrity and loving relationships. They worked as a team, never spoke a harsh word and always found ways to serve those less fortunate. Their devotion to their church family was unparalleled. Joan was blessed to be born with an amazingly joyful and optimistic perspective and a wonderful sense of humor and duty. She found the best in others and had the gift of making everyone feel special. Her selflessness and positive outlook inspired her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom she loved so much and was happy to spoil with the greatest gifts of love, time and delicious family dinners. She would smile knowing that she died on Epiphany, the day the Wise Men brought their gifts to Jesus.
We will always love you Mom, Nana, Aunty Joan and friend. We take comfort in knowing you are now reunited with your beloved Ernie. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 1:30 pm at Jubilee United Church, 7591 Gray Avenue, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the United Church of Canada Outreach Programs.
