Joan Allison Folinsbee, September 21, 1929-October 19, 2023. Joan died peacefully after a short illness.
Joan grew up in Toronto, Canada. After finishing high school, she went to work in her uncle’s law office. Shortly after that, she met the love of her life and future husband, John Folinsbee. One of the great stories in the family was that when John, a mining engineer, was prospecting near Yellowknife, he sent Joan her engagement ring through the mail.
Joan and John lived in different northern mining towns in Ontario and Quebec during the early years of their marriage. Joan was a true pioneer. She cooked meals on a wood stove and hung her laundry out in 30 below Celsius in the winter. Later, in her many years in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, she made life-long friends and was known for her fabulous holiday parties. She and John also lived in Ireland and then finally settled in Denver, Colorado where they resided for forty years until John’s death in 2021. In Denver, Joan’s great love was to work as a volunteer at La Cache in Denver, a consignment shop that provided revenues for children and their families at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She worked as a volunteer for almost forty years and only stopped just before COVID hit. It was through this volunteer work, that Joan made a special group of friends that she kept until her death. She and John also enjoyed many road trips to Green Valley, Arizona, Point Pelee in Ontario, Kamloops, and Sue and Howard’s cottage in Haliburton to name a few.
In 2021, after the death of her dear husband, Joan moved to Kamloops, British Columbia to live with her son John and daughter-in-law Susan. John and Susan provided loving and wonderful care of her in their home and also when she moved into Kamloops Senior’s Village last April. During her time in Kamloops, Joan enjoyed drives to the winery, “the pond” and various other beautiful places in the area with her children. As part of these outings, she would almost always end up at the Dairy Queen for a soft ice-cream cone. After all, what is a day without an ice-cream cone? Joan missed her darling John every day and often said, “We had the love affair of the century!”
Joan had an eye for, and love of fashion and design all her life. She just knew how to put things together to create a beautiful environment or an outstanding outfit. Even when she was ill, she managed to look glamorous. One of her great passions was researching and collecting old Canadian pine. One could see the fruits of this interest when visiting Joan and John’s home in Denver.
Daughter of Allison Woodburn Bristol and Harry Kendal Vipond, Joan is survived by her son John Folinsbee (Susan); daughter Sue Folinsbee (Howard); brother Don Vipond (Clare); grandson James Folinsbee (Chantal); granddaughter Tannis Waugh (Paul); and sister-in-law, Joan Timmins. She was predeceased by her husband John Folinsbee.
Joan’s family would like to acknowledge and give heartfelt thanks to Bonnie Johnson, Joan’s caregiver and friend who provided love and support to Joan over the last two years of Joan’s life. They acknowledge the special relationship that Joan had with Bonnie and the impact that this relationship had on Joan’s quality of life.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Kamloops Senior’s Village, the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice House, and the Kamloops General Hospital for the support and care they gave Joan. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in the future.
