Jim Rowat Obituary
Rowat, James Harris
With family by his side, Jim Rowat passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024 after a sudden and brief hospitalization at the Smiths Falls District Hospital. He was 86.
Devoted husband of 55 years to Barbara, loving father to his son Scott (Heather) and his daughter Krista. Proud and treasured grandfather to Dominic and David. Predeceased by his parents William and Rita Rowat of Carleton Place. Jim was a dedicated and devoted family man and a genuine and true friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Born in Manotick and raised in Carleton Place, Jim settled in Smiths Falls as a young man. There he met his wife, raised his family and ran a successful flower shop, Rowat Flowers, together with his wife. Their union was a testament to true partnership, filled with love, respect, and unwavering support in all aspects of life. Outside of work, he belonged to the Smiths Falls Art Club and served his community for 25 years as a member of the local Civitan Club. In 1992, Jim and Barb retired “early” and began the next chapter of their lives as retirees at their lakeside home near Chaffey’s Lock in Rideau Lakes. Here Jim was a founding member and former President of the Rideau Lakes Artists Association, an active member in the Chaffey’s Lock Seniors Club and the Elgin United Church. When not on the go, you could find him happily tending to his gardens. More than a hobby, never a chore, gardening was a passionate labour of love. A lifelong sports fan, his support of the Ottawa Senators, Ottawa Redblacks and the Toronto Blue Jays never wavered.
Jim will be remembered for his gentle and generous nature, his kind heart and strong faith, and his talent and creativity as shown through his well-landscaped gardens and his artwork. And maybe just a little for his humour and wit. His close friends and family will forever cherish the time spent together, the laughter shared, and memories made over the years.
As per Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place with interment at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa at a later date. Details for a Celebration of Life have not yet been finalized. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Elgin United Church or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lannin Funeral Home.
