William James McCloskey, passed away peacefully at Victoria hospital in London, Ontario on Monday Feb 6, 2023 surrounded by his family at the age of 78. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Pauline, and his children, Jeff (Jenn) of Georgetown, Kevin (Sue) of Coldwater, Philip (Tricia) of Orangeville, and Alison Hall (Dale) of London, Ont. Cherished grandpa of Eamonn, Violet, Taylor, Maeve, Megan, Evalyn, Fionn, Flora, Hudson and Lachlan. Jim is predeceased by his parents Irene and Edwin, and his sister Anne. He will be dearly missed by his brothers Ken, Larry, Ron, and Tom, and their families, as well as his brothers in law, sisters in law, and many nieces and nephews.
Growing up in Ottawa, Jim spent his formative years as a boy delivering newspapers to the Prime Minister’s office which shaped his passion for politics and getting involved in his community. Jim earned his BA at the University of Ottawa, MSW from Dalhousie University and his teachers degree from University of Toronto. After spending four years in the Scarborough Missionary, Jim joined CUSO to teach English in Thailand. After returning home, Jim worked at the Children’s Aid Society in Toronto when he met the love of his life, Pauline. Together they created a beautiful family in Orangeville where he worked as a social worker at the Mental Health Clinic. Jim’s passion for serving others also extended into the community in which he lived. Jim served four terms as an Orangeville town councillor, founded the men’s non-contact hockey league, and coached minor hockey. Away from Orangeville, Jim enjoyed spending summers surrounded by family on the Farm Road in Heatherton, Nova Scotia. Jim shared his passion for sports with his children and grandchildren by cheering for his favourite baseball, hockey and football teams. Jim will forever be remembered for his commitment to family, his sense of humour, and kindness.
Visitation will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Friday, February 10th, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Timothy Catholic Church 42 Dawson Road Orangeville, on Saturday, February 11th, 2023 at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Orangeville.
A tree will be planted in memory of Jim in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 21st Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.
