Jim Elgie, age 57, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Clover House, Swift Current, SK.
James “Jim” Edward Elgie was born on February 10, 1966 in Medicine Hat, AB. He received his schooling in both Redcliff and Medicine Hat. His childhood consisted of playing hockey, bike riding, turning wrenches on anything that had tires or a motor, and chasing girls.
His desire for mechanics and construction started at a young age, mostly being self-taught. During the summer holidays, he spent a lot of his time at his grandparent’s farm in Purple Springs, AB. This is where his strong work ethic began — the skills and knowledge he obtained led to building and fixing everything. His passion progressed into helping build garages, helping with family renovations, stock car racing, and most recently, demolition derby.
Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, playing pranks, and telling lots of stories. His employment was mainly working in the oilfield, truck driving, and farming. However, he did work in production for Lakeside Packers starting in the late 80’s. He was very helpful, smart, sarcastic, charismatic, and a social go-getter. He met a lot of people everywhere he went and had a special touch for making others smile and laugh. He will forever be missed by those that knew him.
Jim is survived by his children and their families, his daughter, Tonia (Patrick Plaster) Elgie, and their children, Karden, Rayden, and Hayden; his daughter, Marina Smith, and her children, Jayda and Kesler; his son, Nathan Smith; his son, Dustin Buteau – Elgie; his siblings, Gord (Marsha Neigum) Elgie, Lori (TJ) Yarrow, and Travis Minion; his special friend, Deena Mills. He will also be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Norman & Shirley Elgie; his grandparents, John & Helen Archer; his grandmother, Margaret Elgie; his great-grandparents, Joe & Mary Makinson; and his best friend, Curtis Gilbert.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm from the Harmony Hall (#1- 1st St SE) in Redcliff, AB.
In memory of Jim Elgie, donations made to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
