DAUGHTON: James W. (Jim)
June 14, 1938 – July 31, 2024
James William Daughton of Watrous and Middle Lake, SK peacefully passed away on July 31, 2024 at the age of 86.
Born on June 14, 1938 in Paddockwood, SK, James was the youngest of six children of Sarah and Robert Daughton. He spent his formative years on a homestead near Christopher Lake, SK, with his five siblings: Jack, Charles, Doug, Ken and Margaret.
James was predeceased by his wife Shirley who passed away in October of 2021. He is survived by his brother Jack Daughton of Christopher Lake and sister Margaret Conant of Penticton, BC. James was the father of four children: Cathy and her husband David Mess of Saskatoon, SK, their daughters Linsey and Katlin, and grandchild Izzy; Bonnyand her husband Don Gorin of Saskatoon, SK and their sons James and Jason (Thida); Pat Daughton and her husband Grant O’Rielly of New Bedford, MA; and Mary Daughton of Humboldt, SK.
James left farm life when he graduated high school. He took a temporary job with the Saskatchewan Power Corporation with his sights set on joining the Canadian Armed Forces to train as a pilot. However, while stationed in Watrous a petite blond caught his eye, Shirley Tuomainen, whom he married October 11, 1958 in Allan, SK. The couple settled in Watrous where they raised their four daughters, James continued working for Sask. Power before retiring in 1991. James, always community minded, served in the Watrous Chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion as a member and later as President. He also served on the Watrous Chapter of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and the Watrous Housing Authority.
James Daughton was intelligent and playful, with many hopes and dreams. He was an avid gardener and carpenter, an inventor of useful things, and ever curious about the workings of the world throughout his life in Saskatchewan. He had a great sense of humour, which was witty, playful and at times, potty. He had a profound love of nature and of creatures both great and small, something that he shared with his father Robert Daughton. He became an owl spotter for the Canadian Wildlife Fund and often spoke of the wildlife that he encountered while driving along the rural roads of Saskatchewan. Kind and generous, he gave his all to his community and to his family. Most of all, he was a loving husband and father.
In the words of his favourite poet, Robert Service, “It’s the Steady, quiet, plodding ones who win in the lifelong race.” And win he did.
