Sister-in-laws: Debbie (Ed)Oakley, Karen (Gord)Button; Barb Barnes, Patsy (Gary) Oliver (both pre-deceased). Brother-in-laws: Matthew (Christine) Fifield; Brian (Valerie) Fifield.
As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends far and wide.
It’s hard to know where to start with Jim, the man was larger than life with his quick wit, sense of humor, kindness, compassion and above all else the love he had for his beloved Gail, his children and family and friends. He would give you the shirt off his back and would do anything to bring a smile to your face or make you laugh be it a joke, prank or funny remark, it made his day to see people smile.
Jim proudly served his country, joining the Canadian military in the artillery division as a gunner in 1965. Starting his life of military adventure, he was stationed in Germany with Canadian peacekeeping operations earning him a medal for his service, something that filled his family with pride. His carefree fun and exciting character led him on many adventures, the likes of which once you heard the stories would make your jaw drop and leave you in stitches.
Upon returning to Canada in 1970, he met the love of his life Gail whom he cherished dearly and in that same year they moved to Labrador City where on December 18, 1971, they were married, starting their beautiful life and family together in a place they would call home for the next 44 years.
Jim started working with the Iron Ore Company of Canada working in the mine as a haul truck driver before he decided to become a mechanic, through blood, sweat and tears, the man loved his job and his coworkers. They started their family with their daughter Tracey born in 1975 followed by their son Jamie who was born in 1977, whom he loved beyond measure.
Jim was a true outdoorsman through and through, he loved, hunting, fishing and going to his cabin in Julienne Lake with Jamie every chance he could get, be it rain or shine, windy or calm didn’t matter, any chance to go fishing in «the ponds» with his outboard motor over his shoulder, climbing the steep hillside to get to his old wooden boat, with a grin on his face knowing he had reached his happy place. The love this man had for his family and friends knew no bounds. He was so proud of his family, and worked his hardest to provide us with the best life we could have ever had. He adored his children and would do anything and everything he possibly could for them to ensure they had a wonderful life and then when his grandchildren came along, he had everything in life he could have ever wished for, he loved those grandchildren with all his heart. Taylor, Abby, Lincoln Cassandra, Anna, Robyn, Scott and great grandson Owen all brought pure happiness into an already amazing life. They were pops girls and pops boys.
In 2014, after 42 years with the Iron Ore Company of Canada he hung up his hard hat and boots and it was time for retirement and off they went back to his roots settling down in Pleasantview, NL where he thrived going out in boat, fishing with his brothers, tinkering in his garage or more times than not in his favorite place his garden. He was a social butterfly visiting everyone in the communities, making a boat load of friends along the way. He adored his gorgeous wife, always looking across the kitchen table and saying to her, » you look some gorgeous.» They loved their Coronation Street and if you called at 7:30, you would probably be told to call back in a bit, we are watching our Cornie. They loved doing their crosswords together, their card games with family and friends, their drives and trips to see their children and grandkids. They had a beautiful marriage of 52 years, full of love, laughter and a lifetime of memories that will be cherished forever.
Jim will be greatly missed and he will live on in our hearts and in our memories forever.
We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to Jim’s family doctor, Dr. Raie Lene Kirby for the wonderful care she provided over the years.
«There are some who bring a light so great to this world that even after they have gone the light remains.»
