Jessie Margaret (Marg) was born in St. John’s in 1926. Most of her growing up years she spent on Bell Island with her parents and many siblings. She moved to St. John’s to train as a nurse and graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Salvation Army Grace Hospital in 1947. She married “Hal” in 1949 and they settled on Bell Island to start their family, which grew to 4 children In 1966 they moved to Mount Pearl, where they stayed for many years. Marg was a devoted Mom, Grandmother and great homemaker. There are many memories of family dinners, delicious baking, cozy knitting and stylish sewing. She was also known to do home haircuts and perms!
Marg worked as a Private Duty Nurse for a number of years after her children started school. Always interested in learning, she took night classes at the College of Trades and Technology. Later when Hal bought a Texaco Garage and Gas Station, Marg jumped in to work and run the business. Outside of work she had happy memories of fishing holidays with Hal and visits when family would “come from away”.
In her retirement she continued to be active. She learned to swim, overcoming her fear of water, played Bridge and enjoyed other social activities. She found time to volunteer for the Cancer Society and MS, and was active in ACW and Alter Guild at Church of the Ascension for many years.
Marg was a loving, caring woman who loved to laugh and enjoy life, but also private. Her faith carried her through difficult times and her strength was felt by those who needed it. She carried herself with dignity and beauty. She will be remembered with love and respect.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mount Pearl on Friday, October 4, 2024 from 12:00 -5:00 ppm and 7:00 -9:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 2:30 pm from Parish of the Ascension Church, Smallwood Drive. Interment to follow at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy donations may be made in Marg’s memory to the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge.
