Jennifer passed away peacefully on Thursday April 11, 2024, at home, surrounded by her long-time partner David Hayes, her brother Andrew Nicol and his wife Kathy, and her sister Catherine Nicol-Prowse.
Jen had a passion for teaching English in high school, particularly introducing young students to Shakespeare. She spent the last 4 years of her career as head librarian at Sherwood Secondary before retiring in July 2021.
She cherished the relationships she developed with colleagues at Orchard Park, Parkside High and Sherwood high schools.
She loved animals of all sorts, especially her Golden Doodle, Winston.
In her teens, she taught English horsing riding to children. She was an accomplished rider and competed regularly, including several times at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
She loved the outdoors and particularly interior camping in Algonquin park with her father, brother, sister, niece, and nephew.
She loved gardening and transformed the backyard into a paradise each summer.
Jen was a prodigious reader of many genres and looked forward each week to working on the Saturday cryptic crossword.
She was predeceased by her parents Jim and Pamela Nicol. She is survived by her brother and sister, Andrew (Kathy), and Catherine (Allen), nieces and nephews Megan, Tom, Ben, and Pamela, and great-nephew Owen. She will be greatly missed by Dave’s sons Ian (Chiao), and Peter (Leisha) and their children Hugh, Rory, Emrys, Ember, Evie, and Seb.
She loved all of the children dearly and took great pride in each of them.
Dave and family would particularly like to thank Dr. Matt Collins who compassionately managed Jen’s critical condition over the past two years, as well as members from the Hamilton Family Heath Team, Dr. Cameron, and Lisa. Special thanks to our wonderful primary care physician Dr. Anmar Al Safar, who was the gatekeeper managing the entire journey for Jennifer through the healthcare system.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life in the near future.
Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
