October 15, 1942 – February 2, 2024
Sadly, we announce the sudden passing of Jeff Roach, on February 2, 2024, after a short illness. Jeff is survived by his beloved wife, Diana (née Wynne-Jones), and his three much loved daughters: Emily, Beth and Trish. He was so proud of them, the wonderful women they have grown up to be. He will be sorely missed by his younger brother, Roddy and his wife, Soledad, and by his Roach nieces and nephew, Melanie, Mary Catherine and Bernard. His absence will also be deeply felt by the Wynne-Jones clan: Jennifer, Wendy, Tim, Bryony and Giles Philip, and by their children, as well. He so loved children.
To his nieces and nephews, he was the uncle who got down on the floor to play — the famous Tickle Monster! Josh remembers him as seven-feet tall — swinging he and his brother Gabe in the air. Anna remembers him at a wedding, whisking away four-month-old Lola and dancing with her cradled in his arms. Becky remembers the uproarious family Christmas Eve parties at the Roach’s, “where the tree always fell down!” Jeff was a man of good cheer, with a big, warm-hearted laugh and bountiful enthusiasm. He became a mentor for Xan and Lewis, who he would meet to talk about business. Xan remembers him as the first adult who ever talked to him like an adult. “He called me ‘my son,’” says Lewis. “That’s the voice I have in my head.”
Jeff certainly knew about business. He was a senior corporate communications, public affairs, and investor relations executive with such major corporations as CIBC, Imperial Oil, and Northern Telcom. In 2008, he decided to take his skills in communication — 55 years of experience – to the classroom. He became the Coordinator – Corporate Communications Program, and Coordinator – Government Relations Program, at Seneca College. He was still teaching, when he died and still loving it. He was not a retiring kind of man.
Jeff was never happier, in his working life, than he was in the classroom. As a colleague, Holly Cybulski, said in her In Memoriam for the college, “Teaching was Jeff’s passion.” She talked of his commitment to his students, his advocacy, his unwavering loyalty. Those of us in his extended family knew all about that.
But Jeff’s greatest happiness was his family. His daughters remember their father as a friend, a protector, a constant and supportive presence in their lives, always curious, infinitely wise, and always with a twinkle in his eye — quick to find the humor in any situation, quick to laugh, and so full of love. His absence is an insurmountable gap in their lives, but the gift of having known him, has left an indelible mark that will live on within them forever.
And Diana has lost her soulmate. The love of her life. They were married for fifty-five years, four months and nineteen days and they always made the very most of their time together with their family and then as empty-nesters. How Jeff looked forward, in later years, to their annual trips to Europe. He had such a zest for travel. Such a zest for life. And to be in his presence was to feel that delight. It was there in his game and amiable smile. He will be greatly missed.
