Jean Weiler, whose distinguished career as a nurse and tireless dedication to community service enriched countless lives in Kitchener and Mildmay, passed away peacefully at her home on June 12th. She was 85 years old.
Jean was the beloved wife of the late John Stephen Weiler, with whom she shared an enduring marriage of over 58 years. She leaves behind her children, John Herbert (Tracey) of Kitchener and Mary Kay Weiler of Mildmay, as well as her cherished grandchildren Simon, Gordon, Grace, and Evan. Jean was also the dear sister of Annette and Jim, and she was predeceased by her parents Johnny and Rita Smiley and her sister Nancy.
Jean grew up in Kitchener, where her love for sports and animals became apparent early in life. A skilled athlete, she played baseball for the Keiswetters and participated in hockey and basketball. Her fondness for animals was particularly evident at the Kitchener Dairy barns, where she helped harness the milk horses for daily deliveries. This early connection with horses blossomed into a lifelong passion, which she carried into her adult years, often participating in horse shows.
After completing high school, Jean pursued a career in nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital. Known for her playful spirit and practical jokes, Jean became a well-loved figure among her peers. It was during her nursing school years that she was invited by friends to a homecoming weekend in Mildmay, where she met John. This chance meeting led to a profound and lasting relationship, culminating in their marriage and life together in Kitchner.
Jean’s professional life was marked by her dedication and compassion as a nurse. She worked initially at St. Mary’s and later at Grand River Hospital, where she spent many years in the emergency department. Her ability to provide care in high-stress situations earned her great respect among colleagues and patients alike.
In addition to her nursing career, Jean was deeply committed to community service, particularly through her involvement with KW Oktoberfest. Over a remarkable 25-year span, Jean served 18 years on the board of directors and 9 years as parade chair. Her meticulous planning and dedication ensured that the Oktoberfest parade on King Street was a highlight of the festival, bringing joy and celebration to the community without a hitch.
Jean’s enthusiasm for local sports extended to her avid support of the Kitchener Rangers. A long-time fan and season ticket holder, she was a familiar and enthusiastic presence at games, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer for her team. Beyond the rink, Jean enjoyed a good game of golf and remained active in horse showing, reflecting her enduring passion for horses.
In her later years, Jean’s return to Mildmay in 2019 marked a poignant and fulfilling chapter in her life. She spent her final years on the family farm, surrounded by the places and memories she and John had cherished.
Jean Weiler’s life will be celebrated with a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Immaculate Conception, 212 Concession 12, Formosa, ON. Father Lawrence Parent officiating. Interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to reception immediately following interment to celebrate Jean’s life with food and drinks at the family farm, 111 Elora St, Mildmay, ON, immediately following the interment.
