Jean Lillian (Russell) Aalders
1930-2024
It is with sadness but
gratitude for a life well-lived that we, the family of Jean Lillian
(Russell) Aalders, announce her passing from her earthly abode to her
celestial home on Monday, September 9, 2024 surrounded by her family
just as the sun was rising on the horizon.
Jean, daughter of the
late Stanley and Gracie Russell was born on April 6, 1930 in the small
community of Aaldersville. Her early school years were in
Aaldersville and her family subsequently moved to Forest Home. Jean
taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Forest Hill at the age of
15 and boarded with families in the community, as she did in the other
communities where she taught. Many of the students were older and
bigger than Jean, but she was able to maintain «order» in
the classroom. Amid all the courses and teaching, Jean met Foster on
her sixteenth birthday at the Aaldersville Hall where Foster was
playing the violin at an evening square dance. This was the beginning
of their courtship and lifelong love. At the age of 17, Jean went to
Normal College in Truro where she received a «permissive teaching
degree» after which she taught in North Alton. Jean
later taught in North Grand Pre and worked at the Evangeline Beach
Diner that summer in order to earn extra money. That fall, she taught
in the South Alton school and the courtship continued. Jean learned to
drive with Foster’s patience and persistence. The dances and driving
lessons progressed into a romance which culminated in their engagement
followed by their wedding, October 3, 1951. Jean’s school teaching
took a hiatus and she worked at Eaton’s in Kentville and boarded in
town while Foster worked away with Nova Scotia Power. In 1955, Jean
and Foster moved to their new home «on the hill» in
Aaldersville where all three of their children were born. The family
moved to Billtown in 1962 where they rented until they were able to
build their own home on the Northville «corner» and moved
there in 1967. Jean enrolled at Mack Business College in Kentville
where she received a secretarial certificate. After graduation, she
taught bookkeeping courses at Mack Business College for three years.
Jean aspired to become a «full-fledged» teacher and applied
to attend Acadia University and in 1973 Jean proudly graduated with a
Bachelor of Education. She began teaching at Aldershot Elementary that
Fall where Jean taught for twenty years until her retirement in 1993.
Jean taught Grade 2 for most of her career. Jean had a fulfilling
teaching career and many, many students have shared that she was their
favorite school teacher.
Retirement years were
full of many bus tours with friends, including a cross Canada train
trip on the Rocky Mountaineer as well as a European trip where Jean
visited the Swiss Alps. Most of all she enjoyed cottage time
at Gaspereau Lake and the annual summer trip with the
«girls» in the family. Over the years, Jean
attended as many of the school and extra-curricular activities of her
four, treasured grandchildren as she was able. Then when her six great
granddaughters became part of her world, she was thrilled all over
again. Jean whole-heartedly loved her family and that was her life’s
focus!
Jean grew up in the
Anglican Church and was an adherent of Saint James Anglican Church in
Kentville until shortly after Foster’s passing when she decided to
worship closer to home. Unfailing faith was a quiet and steadfast part
of Jean’s daily life, and especially provided comfort and strength
during times of adversity. She was always very involved in the
communities in which she lived, in particular the Billtown Baptist
Church and the Jean Rushton Ladies Auxiliary. Jean especially enjoyed
being part of the strawberry suppers, Christmas pageants and Halloween
mascarade gatherings. Fellowship with friends was also close to Jean’s
heart. She always enjoyed sharing tea and coffee and treats with
family and friends. Jean was well-known (almost famous) for
her carrot cake! Jean was an avid gardener and enjoyed
spending time in both her flower and vegetable gardens. One year she
was honoured with a Beautification Award for her magnificent flower
garden. Jean enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting and knitting. Family
have been the grateful recipients of her beautiful handiwork and will
cherish it for years to come.
Jean maintained her
home in Billtown for as long as she was able to do
so. She was a fiercely independent woman who
persevered in all aspects of life. Jean moved to an apartment and
later into enhanced care in Kentville where she resided until her
passing. Family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to all
those who have supported and cared for Jean over the
years.
Jean is survived by
her daughter, Wendy and son-in-law, Rick Salsman as well as her son,
Kenny and daughter-in-law, Maureen; grandchildren, Christopher
Salsman, his partner, Karine and their children Marianne and Julia;
Jonathan Salsman, his wife Laura and their children, Jordyn, Lexy and
