Jean Thyer Obituary
Jean Kathleen Thyer, born on October 3, 1939 in Montreal, Quebec, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta. Known affectionately as Jean to her friends and “Nanny” to her beloved grandchildren, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, resilience and generosity.
Jean’s life was characterized by her spirited nature, her intelligent mind, and her analytical approach to challenges.
Jean’s early life in Montreal instilled in her a love for language and culture, becoming fluently bilingual and embracing the vibrant community around her. Her educational journey in Montreal laid the foundation for a diverse career, marked by her entrepreneurial spirit and her passion for service.
Throughout her working years, Jean held various positions that showcased her adaptability and talent. She thrived in the clothing industry, contributed her skills to Roger’s Communication and took pride in her time at Foothills Creamery. However, her true calling came as the owner of Cow’s Lick Cafe in Olds, Alberta. There, her homemade soups became a local treasure and her cafe a welcoming hub for the community.
Jean’s interests extended beyond her professional endeavors. She was a skilled knitter, often seen with needles in hand, crafting warm hats and scarves that she generously donated to those in need.
An avid traveler, Jean’s adventurous spirit took her to many places, enriching her life with experiences and friendships around the globe. Her stories and memories of these journeys were cherished by her family and friends. Her last travel journey was with her partner Dave when they drove across Canada.
Jean’s family was the centerpiece of her world. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Len, and the love of her life, Dave. Her legacy continues through her brother Jim, her son, David and his wife Cheryl Niven, her daughter Sandra and her husband Dan Edgett, and her adored grandchildren, Chris, Dylan (Brittney), Dana, Tina (Mike), Ryan, and Brock. The joy of her life was further multiplied by her great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Braelynn, Cole, Abigail, Hudson, Hannah, and the soon to arrive Hayden.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at Bayshore Home Health and the medical team on Unit 38 at the Peter Lougheed Center. Their care and compassion during Jean’s final days were a source of comfort and support.
Jean’s life was guided by a philosophy best encapsulated by the words of Helen Keller “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” She embraced each day with courage and resiliency, inspiring those around her to do the same.
As we bid farewell to Jean Kathleen Thyer, we celebrate a life well lived and the indomitable spirit of a woman who is truly one of a kind. Her memory will continue through her family and may she “Rest in Peace”. Jean’s journey on Earth has ended, but her story will be told for generations to come.
