Jean Hanly, sister, wife, sister-in-law, mother, aunt, nana and great nana passed away peacefully at Alexandra and Marine General Hospital on June 18, 2023 in her 93rd year. She holds many special memories for all of the family: her 4 children – Marnie, Peggy, John and Hugh; her 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; longtime friend to many in Clinton where she was born; friend to many neighbours and others in Goderich.
Jean was affectionately known as ‘ma’ to many family friends and welcomed many youth into her home as her own children grew.
She was widely known for her exploding butter tarts and many culinary delights. She loved her time at the cottage on Lake Huron, especially enjoying the sunsets, card games and scrabble games with neighbours and beach time in the heat of summers. She and Bill (husband) became active golfers in retirement. Jean was well known in the community also for her singing as an active chorister in church choir, Treble singers, McKay Choristers, and Craigellen Singers. She appreciated music in many ways and was to be heard singing even in her last days spent at the hospital.
Jean became an active quilter who enjoyed the design element most. Her quilts have been distributed to many in the community and in her family. With declining vision she stopped quilting only this past winter. This vision loss was also a challenge for her as she was unable to enjoy a good book in print form, but did continue ‘reading’ with the help of friends and of course talking books.
She was a baseball enthusiast, who cheered on the Toronto Blue Jays.
The family hopes that mom will enjoy peace at the end of her life, and also reconnection with her beloved husband, Bill.
