Jean was a bright light in her family’s lives and the lives of so many other people who were privileged to meet her and experience her love and kindness. Jean was born in Newmarket and was the daughter of dairy farmers, Evelyn and Bob Lewis. Jean helped her family run a massive maple syrup operation, her family having the first maple syrup evaporator in York County. She started driving horses at the young age of 7 and was giving sleigh rides by the time she was ten years old! She grew up loving animals, haying and all of the aspects of outdoor life. She was an environmentalist, even as a young child and appreciated nature and all of the beauty of fields and woodlots.
Jean always loved not only animals, but people as well. She loved to meet people and loved to chat. She was such a great talker that she won her high school’s speech contest, went to the regionals and met John at the age of 16 years old. He turned out to be the love of her life. They married at age 22, and bought an old farmhouse on 40 acres, naming it Kelhaven. She and John went on to make it their beautiful family home where they raised their children and lived for 67 years together.
Jean started her career as an elementary school teacher and taught in Aurora, Queensville and Toronto and stopped once her first child arrived. She then stayed home to raise her children and became very active in the community, volunteering generously at church, at her children’s schools, and later became a founding member of Hospice King. She was a devoted mother, and was always seen driving back and forth to sports, music, swimming events, and the list goes on and on. When a new neighbour moved in, Jean was the first to greet them and invite them over for coffee, muffins and fellowship. Anyone could drop by unexpectedly and receive a warm welcome and also a bite to eat. Jean truly was a loving and forgiving person. She never held a grudge. If John had a problem with someone, she would recommend that he feel sorry for the advocate, suggesting that they are miserable because they may have corns! You could not find a more generous, caring and loving woman!
When her four children were more independent, she found time to pursue painting as a hobby and even went back to teaching, dedicating herself to helping children with special needs, loving them all just the way they were. She later went back to school, graduating from York University at age 54 with a degree in Religious Education. She was at the top of her class, getting honours and making it on the Dean’s list. She found great pleasure in not only her children, but her 10 grandchildren and two recent great-granddaughters. Jean loved her grandchildren dearly and always told them they were «more precious than gold» to her. No one had a bigger smile than Jean at her grandchildren’s weddings! One was even held at Kelhaven, the place near and dear to her heart.
We are grateful for all the love that Jean gave to all of us. She set an example that we will strive to follow to make her proud.
