Jason Broadfoot Obituary
At exactly 3:00pm on December 6, 2023 Jason passed away peacefully at the age of 55 his wife and brother by his side. Survived by his wife Maryth Gilroy, brother Devron Broadfoot, sister Shirley Fischer, mother-in-law Marybet Gilroy, brother and sister-in-law Colin and Barb Gilroy, and nieces and nephews Morgan, Ilona, Taylor (Jeromy), Austin (Chloe), Avery, Shae, grandniece and grandnephew Scarlett and Nate. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh and Judy Broadfoot, his sister Susan Kalaitzakis and his father-in-law Jim Gilroy.
Born and raised in Boissevain, MB, Jason was a lifeguard and recreation director and moved to Winnipeg to pursue studies at the University of Manitoba where he began performing at the Black Hole Theatre. After graduation he continued performing and worked for various theatre companies, serving for a time as Executive Director of the Gas Station Theatre. Jason was an actor, playwright, stand-up comedian and producer and after moving to Vancouver with and marrying Maryth in December 2000, they produced and performed an extensive number of shows in Vancouver, and Fringe Festivals across Western Canada. Jason trained insurance brokers and was known for entertaining presentations peppered with humor. Near the end of his life Jason held two jobs that fulfilled him more than any others, that of Managing Director of Realwheels Theatre, a company with a mandate close to his heart, producing performances that deepen understanding of the disability experience, and Taste Vancouver, giving tours of his beloved Gastown where he lived for 17 years.
Jason fought lung cancer with strength, courage and his signature humor. Indeed his very last words were a punch line. He will be so greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. Jason was incredibly grateful for the care he received from his physicians who went over and above, Dr. Wang, Dr. Porter, Dr. Sin, Dr. Shaipanich, Dr. Ryerson, Dr. Esdaile, Dr. Ennis, and especially Dr. Williscroft who performed medical magic to make possible the most incredible send-off for Jason at St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care. Thank you Pender Community Health nurses, especially Bonnie and Verity whom Jason adored. Celebrations of Life will be held in the coming months in both Winnipeg and Vancouver.
