Our beloved Janet Milne (née McIntosh) passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Thursday, January 25th, at her new home in Carleton Place, Ontario.
We are shocked and we are heartbroken, but we are also grateful. She has been a rock in our lives for so long that it feels impossible that she’s really gone. She will be remembered by every single one of us for the rest of our lives. She was beautiful, energetic, outspoken, adventurous, courageous, vibrant, and full of love. She was a champion to us all, with a sense of humour to match.
Janet leaves behind her loving husband Glen Milne, along with her children Mac (Davina), Geordie (Angie), step-children Susi, Garth (Pascale), Auni (Krissy), her ex-husband and excellent friend Bruce Ferguson (Diane), her brothers John (Judy) and Grant (Linda), and her grandchildren Finlay, Kaya, Marlo, Galen (Anett), Thea (Mike), Allison (Sean), Emily (Adam), and great-grandchildren Simone and Ramona.
Janet was born in Cambridge, Ontario, on October 9th, 1943, to mother Mary (née McLennan) and father Duncan McIntosh. She attended medical school for three years at Queen’s University and one year in physiology to graduate with an honours degree and the Queens’ gold medal in physiology. She and Bruce Ferguson were married in 1965, and went to Australia in 1967, where he worked on his PhD and she worked and studied in physiology at Monash University in Melbourne.
Upon return to Canada, Janet worked for three decades in the Canadian civil service, in Science and Technology, Agriculture Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Transport Canada and culminating with eight years as an Assistant Deputy Minister for Human Resources Development Canada.
In addition to being athletic and attractive, Janet was a talented and prolific artist, both visually with her painting and pastel work, and musically with her delightful voice, guitar, and piano playing. She enjoyed travelling, hiking, golfing and kayaking with her many female friends.
She enjoyed the last 33 years of her beautiful life with her architect husband, Glen Milne, a fellow multi-faceted artist. Continuing a tradition established by her grandparents, they anchored their summers in Muskoka at Walker Lake, where they enjoyed the greatest rewards life has to offer with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 PM on Thursday, February 1st, at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place followed by a celebration of her fantastic life from 2 PM until 3 PM.
