Obituary For Janet Mary Griffiths
Janet was born in Camrose, AB, on October 6, 1945. She was the first of three children born to Vincent and Doris Tone. Janet passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the age of 78 years.
Janet is survived by her husband Geoff, and her daughters Karen (Jeremy) Scriver and Lori (Rob) Condon, and her granddaughters Lauren and Brooke.
Her parents instilled in her a love of Jehovah and as she grew, so did her faith and desire to share the good news. In her youth, she shared in a modern preaching method used at the time boldly wearing a placard. As their family grew, the Tones moved to Fort St. John, BC, and this is where Janet graduated from high school. After graduation, she moved to Edmonton, AB, for a time.
It was at Circuit Assembly that Janet met Geoff. They were married on November 7, 1964. In the early days of their marriage, they worked together to modernize the family farm. During this time they endured the loss of a twin pregnancy before welcoming their daughters Karen and Lori in 1974, and 1976, respectively.
Those who knew her, recognized she was a force to be reckoned with. She knew the meaning of a hard day’s work, and kept herself busy whether it was volunteering, teaching sewing lessons, organizing get-togethers, or in her beautiful flower gardens.
When her daughters had grown, Janet focused some of her energy and attended training at the Grande Prairie Regional College, starting a new career of working with special needs children at schools in the area. She thoroughly enjoyed this work and spoke of this time often.
When Geoff retired it was time for a new adventure. They hit the road and saw much of the United States, while volunteering on Kingdom Hall projects, and even sharing in disaster relief in Houston, TX. They made a second home in Powell River, BC, during the winter months where they enjoyed sea views and warmer weather.
In 2017, she welcomed her first granddaughter Lauren, and developed a newfound love of the east coast of Canada making frequent trips to enjoy time with her. In 2022, her family grew again, welcoming an adopted granddaughter, Brooke.
Janet looked back on her choice of husband as one of the things she did right. They made a great team, and in their life together were privileged to be in a position to help others which gave them great joy. The gift of the girls brought her great pride, she beamed when she talked about them, and her joy in the successes in life never got less enthusiastic as they grew up.
The Griffiths farm is a well-known retreat to friends far and wide, many of whom have enjoyed a stay for an assembly or a Kingdom Hall project over the years. Many “youngsters” have fond memories of being “put to work” as Janet would say, helping in the huge vegetable garden and other projects on the farm. Some of her happiest moments are here, surrounded by friends, enjoying a preview of paradise.
It is in sharing the hope she found in the Bible for the future that gave her life its greatest purpose. Janet looked forward to the time when her God Jehovah “will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more” (Revelation 21:3,4). It is this hope that comforts us at this sad time when we know we must continue without her presence for a little while. We look forward to the next get-together where Janet, youthful and strong will no doubt be organizing a feast for the next group of resurrected ones.
A Memorial Service will be held, on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 1:00 pm, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Grande Prairie, AB (10135 128 Ave).
