‘Just be yourself’, ‘Stand tall with your chin up and shoulders back’, or ‘Greet them as if they are as happy to see you as you are to see them’. All words of guidance shared with so many by a wonderful lady.
It is with great sadness, we say good-bye to a very special person, Janet (Jan) Jean Ferguson (nee: Holmes). On Friday December 22, 2023, Jan peacefully passed away with her son Matthew Ferguson by her side in Carleton Place.
Jan is survived by her daughter, Leah Witherspoon (Scott Witherspoon) of Newmarket, her son, Matthew Ferguson (Katie Ferguson) of Carp, her Step-daughter Shanna Laughton (Peter Laughton of Ottawa, her Step-son, Ryan O’Grady (Felicia Minotti) of Greely, and her eight grand-children Aylen Ferguson (Emil Larose), Lauren Ferguson (Neil Miron), Heather Witherspoon, Noah Witherspoon, Ava Laughton, Blake Laughton, Bryanna O’Grady and Grace O’Grady.
Jan is predeceased by her life partner Phil O’Grady of Carleton Place, and her granddaughter Rebecca Emily Grace Witherspoon of Newmarket.
Jan was a person known for her compassion for the well-being of people. She trained as a nurse, and started her career working as a nurse in the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital. After marrying Dr. Don Ferguson, they moved to Carleton Place and became integral within the community. As a new young mother, Jan continued to provide nurse support, by working with the X-ray department in the Carleton Place Memorial Hospital. Later in her career, Jan remained committed to the care of people by serving as the superintendent for the seniors apartments Elizabeth Court in Carleton Place.
Jan is recognized as a high energy force with an unconditional love for her community, the people of the community and her family. As a person, she has been a sounding board for so many people, as she helped them through difficult times. Jan’s energy and passion to race between committee/board meetings, participate in Mudds rehearsals all while keeping in check the support she provided family and friends is comparable to that of an elite athlete. This persistent energy and drive was recognized by the Town of Carleton Place with the Citizen of the Year award. This award was honoured to her in recognition of her extensive list of contributions to the community. Some of which include, the founding of the Mississippi Mudds Theatre Group of Carleton Place, active member of the Zion Memorial Church and its choir, volunteer support of the Carleton Place Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and being active member of Carleton Place Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee.
Nicknamed ‘Mother Mudd’, Jan’s extended family was that of the Mississippi Mudds. Her commitment and love for this group was unconditional. Jan was a person with a zest for life, and making everyone she met feel loved and valued. The Mississippi Mudds celebrated its 50th year of performing this year, and throughout those 50 years, Jan met and gracefully embraced every member. And the Mudds remain an anchor point for arts and culture in the town of Carleton Place.
Whether you bumped into Jan on the street, or had a porch visit to share a coffee, she would give you all the time in the day. She always wanted people to walk away with a smile and feeling good about themselves. It was a special attribute of her personality.
The term ‘Last Man Standing’ is not lost with Jan. She rewrote this quote to be read as ‘Last Woman Standing’. Gatherings of family/friends were always closed with Jan sitting at the table with a smile saying good-night as she sipped her coffee.
As a Mother/Grand-mother/Aunt/Great-aunt, she was a family icon. Her love and compassion for everyone, coast to coast across Canada, was shared and felt on a daily basis. The doors/floors/beds at the cottage on Aylen Lake were always open for anyone who came by. Some of the best family memories of Jan were created around the table at the cottage with songs, cards and board games. The family already misses her warm and melodious ‘Hello’ when answering the phone.
Visitation will take place at Alan R. Barker Funeral home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 11 – 2 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. The funeral will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 11 am at Zion-Memorial United Church, 37 Franklin Street, Carleton Place, with a reception following in the church hall.
