Janet Ann (Blair) Brownell
1964-2024
On Wednesday, February
21, 2024, Janet Ann (Blair) Brownell, passed away peacefully in the
Valley Hospice, Kentville, with her family by her side. Born on July
14, 1964, in Amherst, she was a daughter of Eileen (Blacklock) and
Stewart Blair.
Janet graduated from
Pugwash District High School in 1982, then continued her education at
Amherst Regional High School, upgrading her math, science and biology,
while also working at the Amherst Zellers part time. She furthered her
studies at Mount Saint Vincent University in the Medical Secretary
program. Janet was married in 1984 to Bruce Anthony Brownell, and they
had two children together, Ryan Anthony Stewart Brownell in 1987 and
Alisha Lee Ann Brownell in 1990. Once her children were born, Janet
was a devoted stay-at-home mom, as well as a class mom at Ecole
Grosvenor Wenworth Park Elementary School from 1992 to 2000. She was
also involved in her children’s activities including being a
Beaver leader with Scouts Canada and a Spark leader with Girl Guides
Canada. While raising her children and volunteering within the
community, she still found time to upgrade her education, including
accounting courses at MSVU and attending Compu College’s
Medical Administrative Assistant Program, graduating in 2002. Janet
re-entered the workforce in 2001, starting in Dartmouth General
Hospital X-Ray department, Victoria General Day Surgery Department,
then transferring to the IWK Department of Ophthalmology as a medical
administrative assistant and research coordinator from September 2003
until August 2017. Janet transferred to the IWK Community Mental
Health and Addictions Clinic in Halifax and retired from there on
January 23, 2023. After separation from her first marriage, Janet met
the love of her life, Alan Corkum and moved to Centreville, Kings
County in November 2017 to continue their lives together.
Alan’s two children and four grandchildren were welcomed
into Janet’s life with open arms, and she cherished his
grandchildren as if they were her own.
Janet was active
her entire life and thoroughly enjoyed skiing, biking, kayaking,
walking or hiking, and especially gardening. Janet planted gardens
everywhere that she had roots or lived. Swimming and boogie boarding,
as well as bridge jumping and puddin’ (mud sliding in
Northport is often referred to as puddin’ as the mud there
closely resembles chocolate pudding) were some of the highlights of
her summers. She loved music and festivals, singing and dancing. Alan
and she met at the Kempt Shore Music Festival, and many of her family
and friends have heard her singing along to many genres of music, but
when Shania Twain was on, the music was loud and Janet’s
voice was louder. The steering wheel always transformed her into a
spirited performer and her car served as her center stage. Janet
enjoyed thrifting and spending time with her friends and family. She
was a loyal and devoted friend, always putting the needs of others
above her own.
Janet will be deeply
missed by her children, Ryan (Matthew Tošaj) and Alisha
(Kort Mehrle); grandchild Axel; beloved partner, Alan Corkum; parents
Eileen (Blacklock) Blair and Stewart Blair; sisters, Rosalie Blair and
Sheri (Blair) Cameron. She was predeceased by her brother, Stephen
Blair (2009); grandmothers, Thelma (Trenholm) Blacklock and Loretta
(Straight) (Allen) Blair; grandfathers, Orville Blacklock and Wallace
Blair; and step-grandfather, Clarence MacBurnie.
Cremation has taken

8 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral
service (with a livestream available) will be held at 1:00 p.m. on
