Jane Van Zuiden (née Turkstra), born November 4, 1924, died peacefully on Tuesday May 14, 2024. Jane was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, who arrived in Canada from the Netherlands in 1927; and her husband Tom Van Zuiden (2023). Jane finished high school at Westdale Collegiate in Hamilton and promptly helped her father with the family egg business while her brothers were at war. Jane met Tom, a Hamilton accountant, whom she married on August 30, 1946. Jane will be fondly missed by Lowell (Harwant), Doreen (Doug), Susan (Graham) Thomas (Lynda) and Mary Beth (Richard) as well as grandchildren Tara, Arjun, Tom, Doug, Nora, Dylan, Marni, Geoff, Thomas, Kimberly, Lilly Claire, and 11 great grandchildren.
Jane was an early advocate of natural and organic foods and would lovingly prepare meals in anticipation of large family gatherings. She loved music and loved to play hymns and classical pieces on the piano. Jane took over the woodland beside her home in Ancaster and planted many species of Indigenous plants that she tenderly cared for. Jane was an avid skier and spent many years hitting the little white ball on the links of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Jane was a keen observer of political and international affairs. She was a strong supporter of the arts and other social organizations in the local community. Many thanks for the excellent care provided by the staff at Wentworth Lodge, Dundas. Cremation has taken place. Donations can be made to Routes Dundas or a charity of your choice.
