Jane Johanna (Joanna) Manitowabi (Wassengeso)

Joanna will be remembered, loved, and missed forever by Mark, her husband of 53 years, her treasured children Lisa, Danny (Liz), Randy (Kim), George, and Melanie (Kevin). Also siblings Bill (Larry), Sheila (Don baa), Yolanda (Tony), close niece and nephew Angel (Mike) and Peter (Kelly), dear lifelong friend Janette, and constant companion Kineesh. Joanna leaves her love to her 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grand-children, one great-great-grandchild, and four godchildren. Joanna’s new journey will see her reunited with her parents, Boniface and Margaret George (Wassengeso), siblings Beatrice, Donna, Kenneth, Tammy, Agnes, Randy, Danny, Peggy and Bonita.
Wherever she lived, Joanna’s favourite rooms in the house were the kitchen and dining room and her favourite people her family. Whenever a holiday, birthday, or other special family occasion was to be celebrated, Joanna’s was the place to be for the warmest family atmosphere and memorable meal. Outside of the home, Joanna has always known the value of work, having started at a young age making banana splits and milkshakes at the Odawa-Inn, then, following business college, joined the federal civil service with the Manitoulin Agency Education office in Manitowaning followed by several years with the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa. Upon returning to Wiikwemkoong, Joanna completed her working career as bookkeeper at Rainbow Lodge, being awarded as Employee of the Year by the WUIR in June, 2000. While still working full-time, Joanna took up her true calling with church activities with Holy Cross Mission. Joanna was commissioned as a Eucharistic Minister in April, 2000 then was mandated as a DOS (Diocesan Order of Service) in October, 2004, leading various services from the St. Ignatius church in Buzwah.
Visitation will be at St. Ignatius Church in Buzwah, Ontario, beginning on Sunday, February 18th at 4:00 p.m. with funeral mass also at St. Ignatius Church on Monday, February 19th 2024 at 11:00 a.m with feast following. Cremation arranged with interment at Kaboni cemetery on date to be determined.
Joanna’s family sends much thanks to the dedicated physicians and nursing staff at the Manitoulin Health Centre for the very kind and professional care extended to Joanna, to the MHC Auxiliary for the use of the Hospice Suite, and to Fr. Paul and Joanna’s parish DOS and Deacon colleagues for their spiritual support. Memorial donations in Joanna’s name to the MHC Auxiliary and to Holy Cross Mission for their general operations are encouraged.
