Jan (John) DeVries
May 18, 1937 – May 5, 2024
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful and loving Father, Grandfather and Pake on May 5, 2024, 13 days shy of his 87th birthday, at Fred Douglas Lodge Personal Care Home.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Teresa (Bruce), son Walter, grandchildren Jenna (Sean), Daniel, Alex (Brandi) and Trevor; great grandchildren Nolan, Aiden, Audrey and Xavien; sister Patricia; brothers and sisters-in-law George (Gisela), Johanna, Dorothy, Agatha (Paul), John (Christine); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Annie on March 29, 2024, parents Douwe and Geeske, brother Nick and numerous in-laws.
Dad was born in Leeuwarden, Province of Friesland, The Netherlands in 1937 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1952, eventually settling in Winnipeg.
He married the love of his life Annie in 1961, having just celebrated their 63rd anniversary just before Mom’s passing. They raised their children in Transcona in a loving, caring, Christian home. Dad was a faithful member of Transcona Christian Reformed Church.
Dad’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, playing cards, and reading.
Dad’s working career was spent in the meat cutting industry at OK Packers and Schneiders, with various odd jobs of lawn care and painting. Dad’s greatest love, besides his family, was fishing. Dad was an avid fisherman, never missing a weekend summer or winter. He spent over 50 years fishing and camping at Camp Hideaway on the Lee River. He knew those waters like the back of his hand and unofficially had an Island named after him, called John’s Island. Our summer holidays were always spent somewhere where we could go camping and fishing, which is something Mom and Dad continued to do for many years. Family meant the world to our Dad and he loved us all so very much.
Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Fred Douglas Lodge, Willow Unit, for their care, compassion, respect and dignity shown to our Dad during his stay with you.
Our parents will be laid to rest at Sunnyside Cemetery prior to the service. Funeral service will be held at the Transcona Christian Reformed Church, 131 Victoria Ave. West, Winnipeg, on Wednesday May 15, 2024 at 1:00 pm. For those that wish to join virtually they may do so by using the Worship Livestream link on the Transcona Christian Reformed Church website (transconacrc.ca)
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada, Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace Dad. We love you!
