It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jan Alac into eternal rest on November 17, 2023 at his home.
He was the beloved husband of Otilia (nee Wetrowetz) for 64 years. Survived by his three sons, Thomas, Martin (Janette), and John (Hanna). Beloved brother of Ulinka, Katka, and Marienka.
He was the loving Grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Jan was born in Klenovec, Czechoslovakia on February 11, 1935. He graduated from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava in 1958, was married to Otilia Wetrowec in 1959, and started a career as a chemical engineer, working at Slovnaft. They settled in Bratislava, where he was heavily involved in the Baptist Church.
Following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, Jan moved with his wife and sons Tom and Martin to Toronto, Canada where his third son, John, would later be born. He soon became a very active and valued member of the Czechoslovak Baptist Church in Toronto and the Czechoslovak Baptist Convention of USA and Canada. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and was a leader in many boards and committees.
In 1983 Jan founded Alcot Plastics and for the remainder of his life would be a leading innovator in the field of Polyethylene foam extrusion.
He always enjoyed camping and traveling with his family. After moving to Canada, the family would take frequent road trips around the continent. In his later years, the traveling continued farther afield by plane.
He will be remembered for his generous hospitality, open home and table to many visitors over the years. His house was accustomed to hosting guests for lunch almost every Sunday afternoon. He also had a very strong love of God as was evidenced through his life of service to the Church and into his final days.
In memory, contributions to the Canadian Bible Society and The Scott Mission would be appreciated.
