James Wilfred Atack – February 11, 1938 – October 1, 2024
After persevering and overcoming many health conditions over the past few years with strength and dignity, Jim Atack passed away at the St. Catharines site, Niagara Health on October 1st, having spent the day surrounded by his loving family.
James Wilfred Atack was the beloved husband of Carol (Hackett), dear Dad to three daughters; Julie (Mike) Hughes, Andrea Atack, Beth (Rob) DiDomenico, proud Papa to grandchildren Emily (Mike) Holderney, James Hughes (Rachel Varga), Olivia Hughes, Antigone DiDomenico and Aidan DiDomenico, brother-in-law to Jim and Norma Matteson, and uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Annie (Vause) and Wilfred, along with his brother Edwin and sister-in-law Evelyn. His mother-in-law and father-in-law Marion (Shook) and Eugene Hackett also predeceased Jim.
Jim was born and raised in Niagara Falls. He attended Stamford Collegiate. Jim excelled at sports, most notably baseball and hockey. He accepted a full hockey scholarship to Michigan State University where he met and fell in love with a Michigan girl named Carol Hackett. They were both educated to become teachers, and they married the week after graduation at the University Chapel. Jim quickly whisked Carol back to Canada, and they spent their 63 years of married life in his hometown of Niagara Falls where they raised their family of three girls.
Jim accepted a teaching position at the newly built Westlane Secondary School in 1961. Jim‘s love of sport led him to a career as a physical education teacher. He dedicated much of his personal time to coaching a variety of sports. It was in the gym and on the field that Jim strove to teach his students and players the value of commitment, teamwork and respect. Most of all he hoped he had instilled in all of them a love of the game! He enjoyed his 33 years of teaching at Westlane, Lord Elgin, Stamford and again at Westlane where he retired as Physical Education Department Head. We are grateful to the many teachers, colleagues, and former students who continued to stay in touch with Jim.
Jim was honoured by the City of Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame as an athlete for his accomplishments in baseball and hockey and was inducted into the Stamford Collegiate Sports Wall of Fame for his commitment to school sports and in honour of his athleticism.
During retirement, Jim worked as a starter for 15 years at Rolling Meadows Golf Club, where he and Carol spent many happy days on the course. Each winter they traveled to warmer climates to experience different destinations.
Thank you to nurse Judy Tobin from the Virtual Care Monitoring Program through Hospice Niagara. Thanks to Judy’s daily check ins and care Jim was able to spend most of his time in the comfort of his home at Stamford Estates and not in the hospital. The Stamford Estates community helped to make Carol and Jim both feel at home and part of a bigger family which we all appreciated. We are also so grateful to the 5B medical team at the St. Catharines site, Niagara Health for their care and professionalism. A special thank you to family friend Peggy Huggins who has supported our family with grace and good humour throughout difficult times.
The family will receive friends at MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main St., Niagara Falls, on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. A service to celebrate the life of Jim will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 5645 Morrison St., Niagara Falls on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.
Donations are gratefully accepted to either Hospice Niagara or to the Stamford Collegiate «Jim Atack Scholarship Fund» which recognizes student athletes and supports them in their post-secondary studies. To donate to Hospice Niagara, go to www.hospiceniagara.ca
