Wilbur, James Tate (Jim)
March 25, 1939 – May 5, 2024
Jim was born to Marjorie and Robert, and a sibling to Carol and Dick, and grew up in Toronto. He studied at U of T and Osgoode Hall, but was keen to leave the city. In 1969, Jim moved to Port Perry with his new wife, Margaret (Brewin). He loved the farm and called it home for 54 years. The farm was where he was happiest. Jim worked as a patent and real estate lawyer in the Durham region.
It was hard not to like Jim. He struck up conversations easily, making good friends with Margaret and Sue’s families whom he remained close to until his death. He valued his role as uncle and brother in law. He had lasting friendships from camp, university and Stoney Lake, especially Bob and Mark Helsing. Over the years, he enjoyed relaxing with family at the cottage, canoe camping in Algonquin, and visits to the West Coast.
Jim had a soft spot for animals. At one point, he let some beavers build a dam on the cottage dock rather than displace them, and had the company of an indoor chipmunk during COVID. Jim’s kind and generous nature didn’t make him any less stubborn or quirky. For example, Jim never returned to Mexico after one failed vacation in the ’50s. He wore the same pair of thick cords for years—even on the hottest summer days. Late in life, he sometimes skipped dinner and ate two desserts instead.
Family was everything to Jim. He lost Margaret in 1991 and later found a companion in Sue, who passed away in 2017. Jim loved his sister Carol Lee who he lost in 1992 and who was a great support to Jim throughout her life. Jim was a loving dad to Frances (John), Tim (Nancy), and Amea (Eric). Pops thought the world of grandkids Sam, Martha, Ben, Eddie, Henry, Theo,
Oscar, and Ari. Jim was also grateful to have Sue’s children, Vicky, Katie, and Scott, and their kids in his life.
We’d like to thank Susan Fisher, who cared for Jim and took him on many walks. He was grateful for her friendship and support.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Jim at Ashburnham Funeral Home, 840 Armour Road, Peterborough on Wednesday May 22nd from 2 to 4 PM, with Words of Remembrance beginning at 3 PM.
Those who wish can donate to the Kawartha Land Trust in Jim’s name.
