Obituary
After a brief illness Jim Joyce passed away aged 89, at OTMH, surrounded by family. His wife Anna gave him her blessing to go, and he told her he was ready.
Predeceased by his father Percy, mother Olive, and two brothers Robert and Ronald. Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anna (Wiffen), five children Stephen (Barb), Peter (Nancy), Karen (Lynda), Kevin (Sarah) and Brian (Lynn) along with 13 grandchildren, Megan (Jeff), Michael (Michelle), Sam (Adam), Eric (Kelly), Will (Samantha), Lesley, Ryan (Jennifer), Jamie (Chantal), Lacey (James), Katy (Alex), Erin (Tom), Carleigh, Kyle (Sarah), and an incredible legacy of 18 great-grandchildren.
Born on Sovereign St. in Bronte when it was a small village, Jim didn’t stray too far from his roots. He made good friendships and built communities wherever he went. Jim attended Centriller School in Bronte and Oakville Trafalgar High School. OTHS is where he met mom, who was a cheerleader and dad played for the Oakville Black Knights. Mom was from East Oakville and Dad from Bronte. It was a match made in heaven.
Dad started work at 16 at the B/A refinery in Clarkson which became Gulf, which eventually became Petro Canada, and stayed there for 43 years He started as a mail courier in the plant, and worked his way up to operational management. Dad was well read, self-taught and an extraordinarily active listener and information gatherer. His close friends often commented dad was smart enough to do anything.
Jim and Anna moved several times to accommodate their growing family. Some of the houses required building additional space or renovating, which Jim tackled with the help of friends. Two renovations that stood out were the major additions at the house on Bronte Road, and restoring mom’s uncle’s historic home on Palmer Ave for her. Dad showed us how to support a family through his constant and unwavering love for mom and all of us.
When the five kids were young, Jim and Anna made many calamitous camping trips with highchairs and canoes strapped to the top of the old station wagon. The camping trips provided great fodder for dad’s stories when he retired. Once they became empty nesters, Jim and Anna took many trips across Canada and overseas, often with friends. Renting a condo in Pompano Beach, Florida for several years allowed dad to create another community of great friends down south.
Throughout his life, dad was a problem solver, always able to bring the right people together to get the job done. Dad retired in his late 50s and his second chapter included time spent in Grand Bend and Bronte, where he helped steer both condo committees to make good fiscally-responsible decisions.
Dad led by example. His many community services included volunteer fire fighter, convener of Oakville sports leagues, and he helped with many renovations at Walton Memorial Church. In his retirement he enjoyed a full life volunteering with Red Cross, Oakville Strokers and Oakville Food Bank. He loved to golf and organized a senior’s league of golfers in Grand Bend. In his later years at Grand Bend he pursued an interest in woodworking, enjoying the camaraderie of the communal woodworking space. In Bronte, he enjoyed his daily morning coffee group, where they tried to solve all the problems of the world.
His love for his family outweighed everything. When visiting, we were always greeted with his big smile and huge laugh, and he made you feel like you were the most important person to him. All his grandchildren are lucky to have such great memories of Jim/dad/grandpa/poppa showing up at their graduations, sports games, plays, concerts and weddings.
We wish to acknowledge all the life-long friends and relatives who have been with us throughout dad and mom’s adventures over the years. All of you meant the world to dad, mom and all the Joyces.
We will miss him.
Jim’s family would like to express immense gratitude to the nurses, doctors and PSWs of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for filling his final month with dignity and compassion while delivering excellent and advanced care.
Per his wishes, a private interment will take place at St. Jude’s Cemetery where he will rest with his parents and brother Ron. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to Walton Memorial Church or Kerr St Mission in Oakville, or a charity of your choice.
As per his direction, there is no celebration of life planned, but the family invites you to share stories of your memories of Jim on this page.
