James Vernon Leis
1959 to 2024
James (Jim) Vernon Leis, born September 4, 1959, passed away quietly on June 4, 2024. James will be deeply missed by his son, James Victor Leis, and James’ mother Irina Leis (Strih) of Williamsburg, Virginia. He will be remembered as a wonderful father.
Jim was the second son of Vernon and Arvilla (Schultz) Leis. He was the brother of Timothy (Anne), Paul (Marilyn), David (Sonja) and Katherine (Leis) Bender (Charles). He was the uncle of twelve nieces and nephews and great uncle to four great nieces and eleven great nephews. He was predeceased by his father Vernon Leis and his niece Sadie Bender.
Jim passed away at the Freeport Palliative Care Unit of the Grand River Hospital, experiencing gratitude for his life, having deeply loved and received love, and worked with purpose, and meaning. He, and his family, are grateful for the care he received during the final weeks of his life.
Jim enjoyed lifelong friendships, some dating from elementary school. He had a big heart. He loved his family and friends dearly. His faith, including the defense of the underdog, was important to him.
An enthusiastic learner, Jim graduated from the University of Waterloo with a BA and the University of North Carolina with a Master of Business Administration, with specializations in Finance and Marketing. He was trained in IT programming at Honeywell and completed studies at Eastern Mennonite University. Like his mother, he remained an avid reader throughout his life. As an athlete he competed in All Ontario Cross Country and Basketball and was a good golfer. He travelled extensively across North and South America as well as Europe.
He served as Director of Business Development for Ferguson Enterprises, a multibillion-dollar wholesaler, headquartered in Newport News, Virgina, and as a manager for Mercedes Corporation, headquartered in St. Jacobs. He used his diverse management, finance, and IT skills to develop teams and support capacity development across organizations. Over the final years of his working life, he enjoyed his autonomy and drove over 1.5 million miles as a long-haul truck driver “without accident” he proudly mentioned. Having been born in the U.S. and spent much of his working life there, he returned to southern Ontario in recent years.
He made a practice of keeping a list of key goals which he regularly updated as well as a list of the happiest days of his life.
Jim donated his organs to medical research and cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Community Justice Initiatives, Hillcrest Mennonite Church, MEDA or a charity of your choice.
A celebration of life will be held at Hillcrest Mennonite Church on June 29th, 2024, at 13:30h. There will be no formal visitation but you are invited to fellowship with the family after the service.
