James Robert (Jim) Johnson
88, of Hammonds Plains, passed away peacefully at home on June 7th. Born in Halifax, he was the eldest son of the late Roy and Margaret (Flynn) Johnson. He is survived by daughter Linda; sons Rob (Twila); Allen (Cindy); grandchildren Julia, Dominique, and Jake; brothers Ted and Douglas (Marion); sister Rose Lapierre; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Agnes (nee Taylor), brother Art and sister Ruth Ashley.
For 37 years Jim worked for the Government of Canada, first as a welder then later as a civil servant at the Department of National Defence and Public Works. With Agnes he volunteered with the Uniacke Therapeutic Riding Association for Disabled Children for several years and served at one time as the director. For more than 25 years he proudly served in different capacities on the board of Credit Union Atlantic.
He was active in sports for many years, playing hockey and senior-level baseball then recreational baseball with the Yellow Pagers until age 70. Jim also enjoyed watching sports and was a long-time fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. He liked working outdoors and took pride in maintaining his large property.
The most important thing to Jim was his family. He was involved with coaching his sons’ baseball teams. Papa was a central figure in his grandchildren’s lives. He often drove his granddaughters to the barn where he watched their riding lessons. He attended many of his grandson’s hockey and baseball games and some away tournaments. Papa celebrated their every academic and recreational achievement.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 11:00 am at Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggys Cove Road in Upper Tantallon. Donations may be made to KidSport Nova Scotia.
