James Hawkins Obituary
With sad and heavy hearts, the family of James Robert Hawkins announce the sudden passing of our beloved Jim, on Thursday evening, Nov 9, 2023, In a car accident close to home In Lower Gibsons. Jim will be sorely missed by Vanessa, his loving wife of 23 years, his precious boys, Travis, Garret (Amy), and his darling stepdaughter, Jessica (Dave), and his much-loved grandchildren, Charlotte and Zachary. He is survived by his sister, Candace (John), brother, Clifford (Wendy).
Jim was born in Esperanza and grew up in Tahsis, BC, on Vancouver Island’s rugged west coast, and had a close, loving family. Jim is predeceased by his father, Handel Albert Hawkins (Andy to those who knew him), his lovely mom, Irene Lillian Hawkins, who was known throughout the area as «the Donut Lady» and older brother, Douglas Hawkins. Later in life, the family grew to include his older half brother, Lance Piggot. They have gone on ahead to receive him, we hope and pray.
Jim was a shy, quiet boy with a love of reading and learning. He was a fiercely loyal and true friend, and he made many!
He began working in the sawmills of Tahsis at 16, and loved driving the sidewinders. He went on to earn his Red Seal Millwright Journeyman certification in 1991. He was a fierce unionist, and knew the Robert’s Rules of Order by heart, which made him an asset (and a thorn) to other members and his executives. He was highly intelligent, and had an amazing memory for people and events.
He believed in the social work of the Royal Canadian Legion and was on the executive of his Tahsis branch 169. In Gibsons, he continued his service at branch 109, and was proud to receive his 25-year pin on October 30th, 2023.
Jim never liked being cold, so after he and Vanessa realized they were kindred travel spirits, they began snow-birding in San Patricio-Melaque, Mexico, in the winter.
There will be another celebration fiesta with his Mexican family and friends later this winter season, date to come.
After Jim and his wife’s early retirement, two years apart, they began traveling extensively. They joined Jifu Travel, and as a result, have a wide number of friends around the world. He loved promoting the travel experience with his many social media posts. His bucket list is still long and unfinished, but his wife, Vanessa, hopes to keep his torch lit, and travel on.
Jim will be remembered and loved by many people, and it was his heartfelt wish that he have a celebration of his friendships and not a sad affair. So put on your party clothes, and if you are able, please join Vanessa and family for his Fiesta on Saturday, November 25th at 1:00 pm, at the Legion Hall, Branch 109, 747 Gibsons Way, Gibsons BC.
He will be partying with us in spirit.
Vanessa suggests that in memory of Jim, get involved in a local literacy program in your community; he would love that!
