McMILLAN, James Paul «Jim»
August 28, 1940 – August 11, 2023
James Paul McMillan (Jim, Dad, Grandpa Jim, Uncle Jim) passed away on Friday, August 11th, 2023 at the age of 83 from complications related to colon cancer.
Jim lived his life with zest and passion, with his wife, Sonia, by his side. Theirs was a long and deep love affair: Married the day after Sonia turned 21, Jim and Sonia spent nearly every moment together and lived life to the fullest for 59 years.
In the early years of their marriage, they both taught school in Durham Region before launching “The Grey House”, a highly successful gift and rattan furniture store, which they ran together as a family business for over 30 years in Oshawa, Ontario.
Together they raised two children – Jenn and Craig. Jim was an enthusiastic and engaged father. He coached the kids’ soccer teams and chaperoned many high school music trips. Jim was an extremely supportive and patient son-in-law to Sonia’s parents, Mike and Nadia, and was very well loved by Sonia’s entire Ukrainian clan in Oshawa.
After selling The Grey House in 1998, Jim and Sonia retired to their sailboat – the Jimson – which they lived on for several winters, cruising through the Bahamas and Cuba. They put down roots in Picton, Ontario, where Jim threw his energies into volunteering at the Regent Theatre, having tremendous fun working with performers and other volunteers, including his son Craig, at the theatre. Jim and Sonia were adventurous travelers, making trips (often only with what they could
carry in their backpacks) to China, Vietnam, Argentina, France, Italy, and many times to Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
Jim’s grandkids, Claire, Sabine and Rowan, loved taking weekend trips to Picton to visit Grandpa and Grandma. They took great joy in riding with Grandpa on his scooter, being pulled around in the trailer behind Grandpa’s tractor, attending the Milford Fair, fishing with Grandpa off the dock, and goofing around in the toy store with Grandpa.
Jim is survived by his best friend and love, Sonia, children Jenn and Dave, and Craig and Holly, sister Joan, grandchildren Claire, Sabine, and Rowan, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gord and Dianne, nieces Sara, Shelley, Kelly, and Melissa, Sonia’s Aunt Leda and cousins Irene and Derek, and his loving cat, Eddie.
As Jean from Laundry Farms told Sonia with a hug on the weekend, “Jim always had a story to tell me”.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ‘Back the Build’ for the new Picton Hospital, or to the Loyalist Humane Society.
Jim rested at Rushnell Funeral Homes – Picton Chapel, 33 Main Street (613-476-2450). Online condolences and to share memories of Jim, please visit: www.rushnellfuneralhomes.com
