Passed away peacefully at Carbonear General Hospital on June 3, 2024, James Joseph Prendergast, age 92.
Leaving to mourn, his wife of 60 years Patricia (Mackey), son James (Jane), daughter Patricia Power (Randy), grandchildren Sara Smith (Steve) and Erin Prendergast, sisters Mary Whalley and Alice Garsed, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, James and Alice (Lyons) Prendergast, brothers Pat, Geoffrey, Michael, and Tom, and his sisters Ann, Sarah Gibbons, and Bridget O’Connell.
Born in Accony, County Mayo, Ireland, James joined the Garda Síochána before emigrating to Canada in 1959 to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was a proud member until his retirement in 1982 and enjoyed the camaraderie of the RCMP Veterans Association until his death.
He was a force of life and love with a big laugh and a permanent Irish twinkle in his eye. He loved music and conversation and always had a story to tell. He loved to share stories of good times spent with family and friends and his stories frequently featured sports (his successes and joys playing Gaelic football, squash, tug of war, boxing and tennis), his memories of his homeland, or his proud membership in organizations including the Corner Brook Irish society, the Knights of Columbus, the Total Abstinence (Pioneer) Society, with which he made a pledge at age 15 that he never broke.
Jim was a warm and wonderful man who loved his family with a giant heart, provided support and guidance, and made people feel good just being around him.
We are grateful for the gift he was in our lives and heartbroken that he had to leave us.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Slade’s Funeral Home, Carbonear on Thursday: 2-5 P.M. & 7-9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, as expressions of sympathy donations may be made in his loving memory to St. Patrick’s R.C. Church or the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. from St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, Carbonear. Interment will follow at a later date.
