Obituary of James (Jim) Lyle Bowes
Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 77, due to prostate cancer, at Grace Hospice, with his wife Denise (“Sweetheart”) at his side.
Jim will forever be missed by his loving family and friends.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Denise (nee Cardinal) and his loving children; son Dana (Cathy) Bowes and daughters; Tammy Bowes (Scott Lovell) and Nicole Goethals. He was a loving and doting Poppa to his grandchildren; Ashley Vinthers (Martin Dodd), Larissa Vinthers, Nate Goethals and great-granddaughter Scarlette Dodd. Jim leaves behind his siblings; Maureen (Don) Stevenson, Len (Margot) Bowes and Glenys (Bill) Tedford; his in-laws; Doreen/Boom (Murray) Thomas, Darlene/Doll (Gary) Bonham and Len Cardinal (Kathy Buckman) and his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his parents, Ken and Reta Bowes.
As a boy Jim was in the Cadets, where he was a marching band drummer. Jim served in the Royal Canadian Navy as an Honourable Able Seaman on the HMCS Bonaventure from 1963-1966. He loved to recall his Navy days and share his experiences and many funny stories. Thereafter he worked primarily in the printing industry, in both sales and production, including opening his own business, Photo Litho Printing (‘The little printer “GNOME” to please’). Jim loved all kinds of music and was able to enjoy this as a DJ for Garry Robertson Music Services and then Crystal Sound. He had great delight DJing for CJNU, before he and Denise retired to Raymond, Alberta, in 2013. While in Raymond, Jim took great joy in volunteering with special needs kids at a horse stable. In 2018 Jim and Denise moved back to Winnipeg, to spend more time with their grandson, daughter, family and friends.
Jim enjoyed family time, fly-in fishing with his family and friends, time at the trailer at Pioneer Beach (card nights, karaoke nights, fishing, relaxing by the fire and many laughs), playing poker, weekend trips to Fargo with friends and absolutely loved our trip to Maui in December 2018 with Denise, Nicole and Nate (“best trip ever”).
The family is so thankful for all the medical care and support provided by Cancer Care, Riverview, St. Boniface Palliative Care, Grace Hospice, Sobey’s Pharmacy on Kenaston, HomeCare including our special aide Angie and the wonderful Palliative Care team. We also want to express our gratitude for the support and love from Glenys, Bill (fist bump) and Terry (his BFF) for their weekly and eventually daily visits. They always brought a ray of sunshine to his day.
He was a generous, loving and caring man, who loved to make people laugh. Our loss is immeasurable, yet so is the legacy of love that he left behind.
Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 1:00 – 3:00 at Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre (26 Molgat Ave).
