Obituary For James (Jim) William Smith
There will be an informal gathering for the late James (Jim) Smith on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at the Golden Age Centre between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Squares, cookies, coffee and tea will be available. Family and friends welcome.
November 05, 1928 – February 29, 2024
Jim was born in Virden, Manitoba along with his twin brother George who passed away at the age of 14 months from pneumonia.
Jim started in the newspaper business when he was seventeen in Virden, in 1958 he moved his family to Neepawa, Manitoba and continued working in the newspaper business, in 1962 he moved his family once again to Lloydminster to work for the Merdian Booster newspaper and eventually moved his family to Grande Prairie in April 1972 to open a branch of the Merdian Booster. Jim later joined Menzies Printers & Stationery. Jim left Menzies to start his own commercial printing business called Starcrest Printers in 1978 and in 1986, he added Ashley Stationery. After selling Starcrest Printers, he went to work at The Print Shop until “HE” retired.
Jim was an active member with the BPO Elks Lodges in both Lloydminster and Grande Prairie. He enjoyed curling and bowling through out his years. Jim served on many boards in the Grande Prairie community, including the Grande Prairie Public Library, the Golden Age Centre and Toastmasters.
Jim will be sadly missed by his wife Connie of 68 years, his daughter Candice and Ray Sylvester and their family, his son Kelvin and Colleen Smith and their family and daughter-in-law Judy Smith. He is remembered by his youngest sister Betty and Ron Eldridge and their family, his sister-in-law Greeta McIntosh and her family, and the families of Jean Murtha and Albert Smith.
Jim was predeceased by his son James Ashley Smith, his parents Charlie and Lena Smith, sister Jean Murtha, brother Albert Smith.
The family would like to thank the staff of Grande Prairie Care Centre for their care and compassion for Jim over the past four years.
There will be a family gathering later.
