We said farewell to a remarkable soul on December 16, 2023, as James ‘Jim’ McClurg, left this life for another, leaving behind a profound legacy of love, wisdom, kindness, and generosity.
Jim was born January 11, 1946 in Vancouver. At the age of 15, he experienced a profound loss when his father was killed in a workplace accident. For the remainder of his teen years, he worked hard to aid his courageous mother in financially supporting his four younger siblings. Through this, he developed a work ethic that remained in place until he passed.
Jim married his wife Danielle in 1967. His wholehearted love for her, was a testament to their steady bond forged over 56 years of marriage. Through life’s ebbs and flows, he stood as her steadfast companion, exemplifying the true essence of unconditional love. Their love story extended beyond their home, as they spent meaningful time at their lakeside cabin where they opened their doors to many and hosted “cousins camps” every summer for their six grandchildren. “Papa” and “Nanny” revelled in these moments, crafting a legacy of family closeness that will endure for generations.
As a father and grandfather, Jim brought joy and warmth into the lives of his daughters Kristi and Erin, son-in-law Phil and grandchildren Joshua, Rebekah, Malaki, Leorah, Markus and Koen. He cherished each family member for their unique spirit, taking the time to nurture their individual passions and interests. Whether sharing tales from his own life, imparting invaluable wisdom, or simply being present to listen, he created special and memorable bonds.
In his relationships, Jim cultivated bonds that transcended time and distance. He was known for his understanding, reliability, and genuine care. During his last months, he was deeply touched by the number of visits, emails and phone calls he received from far and wide. His very special spiritual sons and daughters and his brother and sister-in-law were an unending source of love and support for him as his health deteriorated.
Throughout his life, Jim was a mentor to many people of all ages. He dedicated extensive time and passion to coaching various sports teams in which his children and grandchildren actively participated. His commitment to nurturing young people extended beyond familial ties, shaping the lives of many through his guidance, mentorship, and support. In the 1990s, Jim and Danielle provided compassionate guidance as leaders at Harvest House, a nurturing discipleship community located in East Vancouver. In the Church, he loved to equip and train people in small groups.
Jim had the privilege of travelling extensively during his life. He was impacted significantly by three countries in particular: East Germany (before the Wall came down), India, and Israel.
Jim was a visionary entrepreneur whose drive and passion led to the creation of three successful businesses. He was innovative and dedicated, often mentoring people and inspiring others with his knowledge and courage. As dedicated as he was to his work, family always came first. He involved his family in his businesses, giving meaningful jobs to his children and grandchildren, and teaching them business acumen and leadership skills.
Jim’s life was deeply rooted in faith and love for God and His Word. His unwavering dedication to his beliefs was evident in the kindness and compassion he extended to others. As a faithful servant, his journey continues in the arms of God, where he rests in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and grace he so faithfully embraced during his life. His legacy of faith and goodness will continue to inspire and guide those he leaves behind.
Jim will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In honour of his life, please consider helping someone in need.
