Mr Jimmy, as he was fondly called by many, was born March 2, 1930 at the beginning of the Great Depression and he lived his entire life in the community of Lawn. Blessed with loving parents and siblings, they shared an incredible bond that continued until his last day on earth. We all know that Aunt Anita and Aunt Kit are deeply saddened by the loss of their brother.
Jim didn’t have the liberty of a formal education, but he took that struggle and turned it into an opportunity to master many skills. He embarked on his life’s journey by starting to work with the High Roads at the young age of 15 and then spent many years working underground at the mine in St. Lawrence, where he accumulated a treasury of stories which he loved to share with anyone who would lend an ear. He was a jack of all trades and worked hard all his life, taking on roles such as a carpenter, bricklayer, fisherman and plant worker. He was a man of unwavering principles and boundless determination. The epitome of hard work. He was revered for this remarkable work ethic and also for his tireless dedication to provide for his beloved wife, Edith, and their 14 children. His commitment to his family knew no bounds and his sacrifices served as a testament to his enduring love and selflessness.
Married to his beloved Edith for nearly 70 years, their relationship exemplified the true meaning of love, partnership and companionship. Theirs was a love story for the ages, a bond that withstood the tests of time and adversity, serving as an inspiration to all who knew them.
Beyond his role as a devoted husband and father and brother, he was a respected member of his community. His integrity, kindness, and generosity endeared him to all who had the privilege of crossing his path. Whether lending a helping hand to a neighbour in need, risking his own life to save another or becoming the unofficial foreman on every job site he visited, he still had time to offer words of wisdom to those seeking guidance. Jim touched countless lives with his warmth, compassion and humour.
As we mourn the loss of our Dad, let us celebrate the profound legacy he leaves behind. His memory will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who were fortunate enough to have been touched by his remarkable spirit.
Rest in peace, Dad. Your journey may have come to an end, but your spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
