James “Jim” Harold Bean, Jr. – age 68 of Knoxville left his earthly home on Sunday, February 26, 2023. An avid outdoorsman, Jim loved being in the woods and camping. He very often combined his love of reading and nature by laying in his hammock reading a favorite book from his large, quite diverse, collection. All things Tarzan of the Apes were his favorite. Growing up in the ‘60s gave him a love of great music, and he enjoyed all the “Greats”, especially Elvis. Jim attended John Sevier Elementary School and graduated from Holston High School in 1972. The next spring, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served until 1975 when a motorcycle accident injury shortened his military career. His time in the Marines provided colorful stories as he sailed on an aircraft carrier and traveled in the Mediterranean. He continued his education by earning his B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries from the University of Tennessee. Studying black bears and Eastern Red Cedars was a special time in his life. He also worked as an ironworker and most recently retired from Lowe’s after twenty years as a Contractor Sales Associate.
Jim is preceded in death by parents, James H. Bean Sr. and Catherine Imogene Chrisman Bean; grandparents, Frazier Conway and Bargie Smith Bean, and James A. and Ida J. Strange Chrisman; and several aunts and uncles.
He is survived by brothers, Dennis Bean and wife Valarie, and Steven Bean, all of Knoxville; nieces, Leslie Allen of Blaine and Ashley Buress and husband Ryan of Knoxville; great nephews, Cadin and Rylin Lane of Knoxville; great niece, Eliza Allen of Blaine; aunt, Maleta Fain and husband Fred of Dandridge; and many other relative, friends, and cousins. The family thanks UT Medical Center for their care of Jim, and especially the CVICU nurses at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville for their excellent care. God placed a special Air Force Veteran nurse to be with Jim in his last hours at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN. For that we are thankful!
The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Bridges Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 7:00 PM with Pastor Bradley Beeler officiating. Family and friends will meet 2:45 PM on Sunday at French Broad Church of the Brethren Cemetery for a 3:00 PM interment. Arrangements by Bridges Funeral Home, 5430 Rutledge Pike, 865-523-4999. www.bridgesfuneralhome.com
