It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jim Wiswell of Toronto on May 9, 2024 at the age of 66. He had a massive heart attack and died instantly. His recent move to a new location where, thanks to Ellen, he was surrounded by most of his special personal books and pictures from his “Mancave”, had given him hope for brighter days.
Jim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Ellen Foster, his brother Andy (Nancy) and their children Kimberly (Shaun), Fraser (Lori), Ainsley (Riley) and Graham (Larissa) and his sister Mary (Gregg) and their children Adam (Nicole) and Janine (Matt). Left to mourn in Ellen’s family are her father Peter, sister Nancy (Rod), and their children Sarah (Steve) and David (Caitlin) and her brother Charles (Karon) and their children Kathryn (Iain) and Grace.
As his friends will know, he was diagnosed with Huntington Disease and coped with its affects for many years. This gave him the opportunity to retire early to travel in his beloved Airstream and volunteer for many different causes. Jim will be remembered by others as a man on a mission as he helped a variety of organizations reach their fundraising goals. For his many involvements and contributions, Jim received many awards, the most special to him being the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Award in 2002.
His passion was architecture, and he often gave fundraising tours of historic buildings and neighbourhoods. Just as recently as this week he was giving a personal tour to family as we drove by many memorable Toronto sites, complete with the architect’s name and dates of construction. He was in his element!
We would like to acknowledge the care given by his new friends at Parkland in Ajax, the expert services of both Elder Caring Inc. and the Family Services of the Huntington Society of Canada.
To celebrate Jim, there will be a family gathering at a later date.
If you so wish to remember Jim, his charity of choice would be the Huntington Society of Canada, crediting the Wiswell Family Fund.
