It is with great sadness we announce Mr. James ‘Jim’ Donald Shearer of Penhold, Alberta, passed away peacefully at Villa Marie, Red Deer, Alberta, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at the age of 87 years. Jim was born in Saskatchewan and was raised by his father, Charlie and his mother, Rachel. His mother was a schoolteacher, and his father was a rancher. Following in his father’s path, Jim started out helping his father on ranches in Saskatchewan. They worked together on the Black Mountain Ranch in Kelowna for many years. Jim, like his father, Charlie, was a true cowboy who enjoyed nothing more than to be on horseback in the mountains and watching over the herds of cattle. During his time growing up in the Kelowna area, he met Eleanor Egolf. They got married and moved out to Saskatchewan, so Jim and his father could work on another ranch. There, they started a family. Their first child was a daughter, Linda, followed by a son, Randy. They then moved to the Sylvan Lake area in Alberta, where sons, Monty, Tracy and Marty were born. He worked on a farm milking cows and then started working at the Michener Centre in Red Deer. He bought a small farm out by the Red Deer Airport in the Penhold area. He continued to work at Michener Centre, while also starting up Greyhound Haying Service with two of his sons, Randy and Tracy, doing custom haying. He worked at the Michener Centre until he retired in 1992. Jim kept busy with many small businesses he started up, selling firewood, custom leather work, yard care and even tours. He loved to travel, always exploring the back highways in the United States. He will always be remembered for all the pickups that he owned, his many paintings and cowboy poems, the many memories made at the bar he made out at his farm, and the hunting trips to the Porcupine Hills with his sons and friends. He will always be lovingly remembered, and sadly missed by his sister, Norma ( Bud) Rice, and her family in California; his sister, Joyce (Tom) Appel, and her family of Penhold, Alberta; his daughter, Linda Shearer Whiting; his son, Randy, and his grandson, Wyatt; his son, Monty, of Vancouver, British Columbia; his son, Tracy (Elaine), of Edmonton, Alberta; his son, Marty (Julie) of Penhold, Alberta, his granddaughter, Heather; his grandson, Matthew; and his very close friend, Barb Meding Ayon; as well as his many cousins and friends. Jim was predeceased by his son-in-law, Mark Whiting and his daughter-in-law, Karen Shearer. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held in late spring of 2025 at Jim’s farm.
