BRYAN, James – Passed away at the Welland Hospital on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 81 years of age. Beloved husband of Bonnie for 52 wonderful years. He is predeceased by his mother, Jean McIvor Bryan and his father, James Francis Bryan, Sr. He is survived by his wife, a number of cousins and close in-laws.
Jim was born during WWII on an RCAF base in Bella Bella, British Columbia. When the war ended, he and his mother went to live with his paternal grandparents in Merritton while his father was sent to Germany to hunt down war criminals. Jim graduated from St. Catharines Collegiate, then joined the army, entering Artillery Officer Training in Shilo, Manitoba. He served for five years as an officer in a number of locations across Canada and with the British Army of the Rhine in Germany as part of NATO. Upon leaving the army Jim worked as a miner in Thompson, Manitoba, a bank loans officer in Windsor, and a steel rigger at Port Weller Dry Docks before entering Brock University to study History, Political Science, and Education Studies earning an Honours BA, a BEd and an MEd. Jim worked briefly for the Lincoln County Board of Education before joining the staff of Ridley College from which he retired in 2002 after a long, enjoyable career teaching and coaching Upper School students. In retirement, he and Bonnie enjoyed many trips together all over North America, Ireland and Great Britain; and many cruises throughout the Caribbean.
The family would like to thank Dr. Blake, Emily, and the medical staff of the sixth floor of the Welland Hospital for all their kind, compassionate care of Jim in his final days. Special thanks to Barb, Randy, Kassandra and Laura.
Jim was generous to a fault with anyone in need, especially when it came to children. Donations in his honour can be made to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, Niagara Nutrition Partners, or a charity of your choice.
Following James’ wishes, cremation has taken place. A service and wake to celebrate his life will be held in early May when the Earth is coming back to life after the deep sleep of winter. Online condolences available at www.cudneyfuneralhome.com.
