Jim (James) SEHL lived his full 95 plus years surrounded by wonderful friends and a loving family. He will be forever remembered for his vibrant smile and calm nature, especially by his beloved wife Ann Marie (Young) of 71 years, his daughter Diann (Doug) and son Stephen (Trish) and grandchildren; Olivia (Chris), Benjamin and Caleb.
Jim has now graduated to the next chapter of his journey where he has been welcomed by the Lord and his parents; Alma (Scherrer) and Alex Sehl, also in-laws Catherine Young-Kraatz and Norman Kraatz. He will be greeted by many predeceased Sehl, Wey and Hartman cousins as well as a host of friends.
Jim’s strongest attribute was his desire to learn, which lead him to study at Ryerson University (TMU) where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following that, he began his career with Sehl Engineering, then later Walter and Fedy, and finally starting his own business – Yuska, Wenzel & Sehl Consulting Engineers where he remained for 15 years. As a later interest he joined the team at Sutherland & Schultz Ltd. where he made life lasting friendships.
Always the ‘thinker’, even into his final days Jim was able to maintained his favourite hobby; reading the newspaper! Jim lived by the motto ‘always do what’s right’. You could often find him writing letters to the editor in support of his volunteer efforts, like the Saugeen Cottagers Association and various social justice groups. Jim was involved in many organizations over the years. Mainly Global Community (now The Working Centre), Dutch Boy Cadet’s Drum Core, K-W Council of Churches, The Serra Club, and a long-time member of Waterloo Knights of Columbus.
Jim used his professional skills and his dedication to lead the volunteer Building Committee at St. Agnes Church, Waterloo, where he and Ann Marie have remained life-time Charter members. Jim’s faith and devotion to his parish church have always remained at the foundation of his life. Losing his drivers licence at 93 and not being able to get to church regularly was a great disappointment for him.
Jim was also quite a story teller and often shared stories about his early life growing up in Waterloo. Many stories included pranks and small business ventures he created. He leaves his family with many rich and colours memories of a JOY filled life. His zest for life and genuine interest in people will be deeply missed. We feel very fortunate to have had a great dad; we all loved him dearly.
As a family, we would like to thank the many staff at Chartwell Westmount that have become our Family of friends. We know how much you loved and cared for Jim and Ann Marie. We will miss your humour, kindness and deep dedication to our parents. We want to extend our gratitude for the Spiritual Care team at St. Agnes for faithfully following our parents to their new home at Chartwell. Your prayers, devotion and regular visits meant the world to both Jim and Ann Marie. As a family, we can’t say enough about the endless love Jim received in his final weeks. The 7th floor staff at St. Mary’s – from the housekeeping staff (Josh), the reception team (Vanessa and Kelly) to the PSW’s (Erin) and nurses, we have nothing but vast gratitude for your care and compassion. There are far too many amazing and loving staff members to thank, but we extend special gratitude to Katelyn, Geeva, Surya and Marlana, they bought continual comfort to our dear dad in his final days. We thank Doctor’s Day and Harlick for their frequent visits and check-ins. We could not have walked this journey in peace without your love and support. Dr. Owens, Sue, Lori and Marilyn we offer endless gratitude. As Jim would always say upon departure, «God Bless You». Know full well that he is at peace due to your contributions.
